Neyland Stadium capacity dropping to 100,011 in 2009

it is not hurting our recruiting ... recruits love to see 100,000 i could care less..... i just wanna win again....beating florida and bama

that's the most important part of his job. Make the most money possible. Winning helps him make the UTAD more money, having millions spent on luxury seats helps ten times more than your little $48.00 bleacher seat and your $3 hot dog. Quit thinking that collegiate athletics isn't a business. Every single school is out there to try and make money. Fortunately, Tennessee is one of the very few that do. And Hamilton is just raising the profit level.
A business with virtually free labor...

Since you quoted me. I KNOW college football is a business. Thanks for pointing out that you think, that I think it is not.

Yes, winning does bring in more $$$. At the same time, if we are not winning AD MH still has to do everything he can to still bring in the $$$.

Then don't act surprised, upset and whiny when he's doing something to imcrease total revenues.

I agree to an extent...I think players in sports that does actually return a profit, that the AD should have to pay each player a stipend...a small "allowance" if you will. For colleges that do not return a profit each year (taxpayer has to make up the difference), they should automatically be exempt.

What kind of a stipend? Maybe 25-50% of the tuition per semester?....So, if the tuition was $5k/semester (yes I know scholarships pay tuition...thanks for the update though), using that amount as a gauge to determine stipend amount, then the scholarship player could get $1250-$2500 during that period (maybe dispursed into monthly installments during the semester).
That's a mere $200k-$400k per year...easily doable, and it gives the players some spending cash as a small "good faith" gesture since these guys are bringing in about 90-100+Million/year.

Nevertheless, they do get a free ride education-wise and of course meals and nice dorms. So, even without the stipend, don't even try the "Virtually Free Labor" bit.
Those things, if a student had to pay for them themselves, would run probably in excess of $75k-$100k for a 4yr term. Regular interns routinely get exploited for free labor in return for..."Industry Experience."(BS). More an more small business are trying to abuse the Internship process to fill in labor needs to avoid having to pay someone to do it. THAT is illegal! At least these players get something very tangible in return...something they would otherwise be in debt for years to come.

You originally quoted one sentence of mine out of context.

I did none of the above....thank you!

I cannot afford season tickets as is. It is not like they are taking my tickets away. I know it is a business.

Thanks you for bashing me for no reason. The respect is mutual.

My guess is the announced attendance will still be around 103k each week. I also think as long as we stay over 100k there is nothing to worry about recruiting wise.

Even if we have 80k and win, nobody will care.

Expanding stadiums is seen as the modern day collegiate equivalent to an 'arms race'. I don't care how many Cadillac, Mercedes and Audi owners we cater to ........... its the attendance figures that give an overall impression of how enthused a fan base is. The renevations have led to a big downgrade in the arms race. Effectively, we have capitulated.

I'm starting to understand why those male enhancement spam e-mails have become so prevalent.

You used OH St in your last example but never explained why they consistently get out recruited by schools with smaller stadiums; nor did you explain the magic of FL and USC.

I have never heard a prospect point to that (Bolded Statement) as the reason for attending UT. How about you name us a few.

USC and UF have tons of local talent. We have to go there to get players and Neyland has always been an advantage as long as we are winning. When we went past Michigan in size it was a big deal. I remember the shirts that said "Hey Michigan, mine is bigger than yours". It has to be a factor in persuading a recruit and our facilities are almost always mentioned by recruits. I don't like the shrinking stadium at all.

Haven't you heard? Girth is what women really want. Instead of making Neyland bigger, we just need to make it wider.

I like that those companies are now using the actors and actresses from Showtime and Cinemax's late night quasi-porn movies to do their TV commercials. It gives them a legitimacy they previously lacked.

Damn! I thought I heard they were looking for endurance. Guess I better get the credit card out again.

While both CA and FL are loaded with talent, both USC and FL both have much more instate competition for that talent. Also, if stadium size is what matters to recruits, why is OH St, as mentioned earlier, consistently out recruited by teams with smaller stadiums?

So, what kind of affect do you think that our stadium shrinking from 107,000 to 102,000 is going to have on recruiting. Do you think that Bryce Brown, Janzen Jackson, David Oku, NuKeese Richardson, etc .., are regretting their decision because of this?

What recruits do you think we lose over this?

Will the silent majority who are upset over this remain silent or will there be protest, petitions, etc..?

How much of an affect do you think the 5,000 fewer people will have on the game day experience of us season ticket holders? Should we give up our tickets because the game day experience just won’t be the same (not as much noise, poor play because we will not be able to recruit, etc)?

.

I don't mind the new capacity as long as we are louder than in previous years. Hopefully winning meaningful games again will help.

I have always prided myself on UT having the most capacity, but a couple thousand less visitor tix, ok. HD JUMBOTRON, awesome!

That's what the lady on my XM commercials claims. I'll write down the 1-800 number down for you next time I hear it. Wider is better. Who knew?

I highly doubt any recruit has ever said "you know, if the stadium seated 106k instead of 101k, I would come to school here". I think people are blowing this WAY out of proportion. Neyland Stadium was getting to be run down looking, and routinely the butt of rival fans jokes. I would gladly take 5k less in seats in exchange for a brick facade, redone walkways and just overall a MUCH nicer facility. I think that is what will impress recruits, looking modern. 5k less in attendance will not even be noticeable by just looking at the stadium.
