Neyland Stadium capacity dropping to 100,011 in 2009

You are correct. During the past 10 years of sucktitude I have always been able to zing my rival friends with, “nanny nanny boo boo; we have a bigger stadium than you”. It has worked especially well the past couple of years against my FL and AL friends. Shuts them right up.

Obviously it was not a big deal to the entire program because the folks who run the entire program are decreasing seating capacity.

Just give me some leg room please!

Alabama made it a point to help fill our stadium for us and make some noise...

At least we're not playing in this crap hole 39,000 strong!

I'll sacrifice the capacity for the upgrades we're getting. Haven't you heard...it's not about who's bigger anymore.

Since Alabama has released the plans to expand past the capacity of Neyland their recruiting has sky rocketed. I know they have a coach, but the increased stadium size has worked wonders at Ohio State and Alabama.

There was a story awhile back in which Hamilton claimed that, according to some sort of unspecified "research," he believed that it was important from a recruiting standpoint to be over 100,000, but that it didn't matter how much over 100,000 we were. No idea whether that was actually based on anything, or whether Hamilton was just pulling it out of his hindquarters to justify the construction projects he'd already decided to do.

So you are giving credit for AL’s recruiting success to the announced plans for stadium expansion. Seriously ?!? So what is the magic that FL and USC use to attract recruits?

PS: How do you explain OH St consistently getting out recruited by schools with smaller stadiums?

FL uses free Gator Skin luggage, USC just brings out the cheerleaders. :mf_surrender:

I guess that huge stadium is why Michigan has won all those national championships since 1948, and why they had such an awesome year in 2008. Why, if they didn't have a bigger stadium than us, who knows how that 2002 Citrus Bowl would have turned out?

Jim Tressel and Nick Saban are the reason Ohio State and Alabama are recruiting well, not their stadiums. Trust me on that one.

Anyway, Sanford Stadium holds 10,000 less people and Jordan-Hare 15,000 less, and if I were an opposing coach, I'd rather face a Neyland crowd than one in either of those places. The ability to pack 100,000 fans into a fishbowl isn't everything.

Georgia's stadium holds a touch over 90k and that's probably the loudest stadium in the SEC.

I would disagree. That stadium doesn't hold the noise in very well. I was not impressed by the noise at all this past year. I think that it hurts them to have the open endzone on one side.

Per UT website and now published in FTIT. Enjoy the final season as the largest SEC stadium. Bama has begun expansion of south endzone upperdeck, which will put them over 101,000 starting in 2010.

I cannot believe this.

too bad,
Bigger's better

I tend to agree with this. I think as long as your stadium is part of the 100,000 + club, you're good to go. There's still not that many stadiums in the country that are 100,000 or more in capacity. There's what, 4?

Michigan
Penn State
Tennessee
Ohio State

....and that's all I can think of right now. So once Bama and LSU expand it'll be 6.

Southern Cal plays at the LA Colosseum and it only holds something like 93,000. I don't think it's hurt their recruiting so much.

LSU is considerably louder than UGA.

and for those thinking you're getting leg room, I can only assume you're paying for club level or the "Tennessee Terrace". Bleacher seats aren't getting more spacious to my knowledge, it's just that several of them are disappearing.

And I find it hilarious that some think we are going to suffer because we are losing seating. No wonder we've been so much better than Florida the past 15 years.

I don't understand how yall don't view this as a big issue. People keep making the point that maybe by decreasing the seats it will make everyone there more into the game thus making Neyland louder. I tottally disagree with that.

What is happening is Hamilton is turning UT football into a social event for rich status seeking individuals to come to. Gone are the days when any Joeshmoe from East TN that has orange blood can go down on gameday, get tickets, go to the game and get rowdy. It's pathetic.

It's loud, but I've never thought it was over the top loud. That open end of the stadium keeps it from being too bad.

LSU and Florida are louder IMO. And Auburn and even South Carolina are right up there too.

That is just complete garbage. Joe from East TN can still walk down Phillip Fulmer Way and buy a ticket for about $20 for any game he wants to go to.

you are blowing it waaaay out of proportion. You'll still be able to just go down there and buy a ticket off a scalper if you want to. Please. He's not shrinking it to five hundred seats.

I don't care about ticket prices, I don't care about recruiting benefits, I don't care about how crammed or not crammed it is. The only thing I care about is who's got the biggest stadium. I was willing to settle for the biggest in the SEC, but now I'm pissed.

We should have all the ball boys and equipment managers bring a friend on game days and they can set up lawn chairs or something.

Having the biggest stadium was so 1996, haven't you guys heard? It's all about having the biggest jumbotron these days.

I may be wrong, but I always thought the school with the largest trophy case was the one most deserving of my envy.
