That wasn't my point. The seats are behind the players - it looks bad with them half empty during most of the game. And it wasn't just the cold night. It is that way with every game.

The other sections in the lower bowl generally remain full during the game.

Some of the updates to Neyland are counterproductive of the Neyland Effect - just saying.

The real Neyland effect is the fans being so loud that the offense made mistakes BEFORE the play even begins - false starts, running out of time because of the noise, unable to adjust the play at the line of scrimmage.

We don't get that loud anymore.

There are multiple reasons why the crowd isn't as raucous as it used to be.

Finacial reasons. It is tougher than ever to buy an affordable ticket and older more affluent people generally aint as loud as younger ones. As an older guy, i can attest that i am not as drunk or as loud as I was in the 90s. Well... not most games

Scheduling. Those 12:00 and 3:30 September games are f...ing miserable due to the heat. And referencing the above point about an older crowd just adds to it.

Sterling blaring music until the 15 second mark on the play clock takes the crowd out of it as well, IMO.

I agree with this. Leave the DJ stuff to the NFL and keep the band more engaged.

Welcome to the transactional college experience. The entire game day experience has been turned into a curated social experience first and foremost. It’s clear the draw is no longer the actual game or team, but the “experience”.

the only "experience" that matters to me is experiencing a Tennessee win.

That's not how it works. They are sold out, which is how you run a business.

Of course it is, but the point he was making is that the current business model has reduced the noise level of Neyland.

I was in ZZ yesterday. At times it was loud, but the crowd got dejected. It is hard to stay excited when we give up 600 yards to a rival.

This is a consistent problem with this system imo. Having a stout defense that a fan can trust to get a stop goes much further to producing a loud environment. We were like a Big12 team yesterday. Having a subpar defense is a crowd killer.

But I'm a defense kind of guy and appreciator, so I'm biased. Those early 2000s games that I attended were on a different level save for a select few in the 2010s and 2020s. And that is because we had a defense that wouldn't let some pudgy prick from Nashville rack up more yards than our entire offense combined.

Would have loved to go to the game yesterday and was staying in the Knoxville area for Thanksgiving weekend. But tickets were $150 a piece for nosebleeds. Since four folks would be going, didn’t think it would make sense to spend $800 on tickets, food, parking, etc… That’s almost the same price as my monthly mortgage payment!

Of course that’s a bargain, when compared to when Georgia or Bama come to town and those same seats will be $400 a ticket.

Just save that money and buy a bigger TV. I remember going to the Vandy game for years and never paying more than $25 bucks a ticket (now the cost of beer and a hot dog). This year even the cupcakes were rarely less than a $100 a ticket, for some of the worst seats in Neyland, one of the largest stadiums on earth. I can not imagine that truly is the going rate for tickets.

I’ve checked at other stadiums all around the country and almost no one has the same ”issues” with ticket prices that Tennessee has. Even our comparable rivals with similar fan bases and stadiums, never reach the stratospheric ticket prices that somewhat mediocre Tennessee teams seem to command. I just don’t get it.

Either we are the most intense, passionate, financially reckless fans on earth or there’s something rotten in the state of (Denmark) Rocky Top!!

The empty seats on home side have very expensive multi year donations and have option of their private inside lounge area which many of them use. Maybe when they go inside, there could be volunteers on standby who could sit outside until they return, just joking. Years ago this was done at televised awards shows so there wouldn't be gaps in the audience when cameras scanned.

I always have a blast at neyland. The game day atmosphere is top notch. Not sure what all the bitching is about.

About the house - it was loud in my section. My voice still hasn’t recovered. But it’s hard to keep the same energy when Vandy is averaging like 7 yards every time they run the ball. Giving up repeatedly third and longs is also deflating.
