Next year's QB?

I'd say the new UT coaches have a tough decision.

You can go with the freshman in 2010, and take your lumps now, and come out in 2011 with an tested sophomore starter.

Of course there are pitfalls with that strategy. You could destroy the QB's confidence, or just plain get him killed.

Or the coaches could go with the senior if they think it will bring them immediate success.

It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. Personally I think they stick with the senior.

It's not a hard choice. If the senior is clearly superior, you play him. If the two are essentially interchangeable or worse, the younger kid plays. Done.

If Bray is as skinny as people make out, he definitely needs a redshirt year to fill out; I'm guessing he had a rapid growth spurt? Stephens should get first shot at starting unless he completely falls apart, but Simms should push him from the get-go. Should be fun to watch this spring.

Did Nick get to use a redshirt year last year?? I don't recall seeing him ever make the field last year and I'm also not sure if he redshirted anywhere else. If he had a redshirt last year, then he would be a soph, Simms a Jr, Stephens a Sr and Bray a frosh. Better than the potential mess we had last year after BJ transfered. BTW...what a shame he left. The job would have been his.

He tried to tell Vol Nation about Kiffin, but no one would listen...

I am enjoying the fact we have a couple options! Here are my picks for QB

Nick Stevens starts ( I am optimistic with him, I think he will surprise us by how good he plays)

Matt Sims will be a back to Nick

Tyler Bray should Red Shirt ( If he does he could lead us into some very good years because his upside is so good )

Lamasion is a non factor

Go Big Orange

I have to agree....when Nick played last year he looked OK in the little time he saw the field....look what Chaney did with Crompton...

If Stephens can read and react to the defense then i think he will be the starter...he has a strong arm and his favorite target is D.Moore,Plus as others have noted he has a year with Chaney under his belt so he should know what is expected of the Qb in this offense.

If Chaney can help NS anywhere close to the level tht he helped JC, I say the job goes to NS. If we can get a half decent OL, we will be a run 65%, pass 35% team

I think Simms has got to BE the favorite to start. Why bring him in otherwise. He was a success in Juco. Got to think it is his to lose. Stephens could not even beat out Crompton. I hope these three QB's are a step up in talent from the last two or three we have taken. Tyler Bray will be the man eventually. I hope they redshirt him this year and let him grow and mature and study the offense. I think that the overall game has suffered from so many players not redshirting. Most 18 year olds need that extra year at the table to put on muscle and learn how to play at the next level.IMO.

Wow we got through the whole QB issue's without BJ Coleman's name coming up. I am at my desk at work and giving everyone that posted here a standing ovation.
1-Nick Stephens job to lose, experience is HUGE.

Teague is a RB? When did that happen? Is Oku a long snapper now? What is going on? Bears, beats battlestar galactica

Bray will RS. Lamison is a warm body.

It is between Simms and Stephens - the winner of the spring competition will likely play the entire season, unless he falls apart or gets injured.

Stephens could not even beat out Crompton.

Now, I want you to sit down and think about how ridiculous this statement is, in light of how Jon played after his turn-around...

How many of our current QBs could outplay Crompton when he was on his "A" game?

He didn't play last year. Even the most optimistic people who have seen him practice are not optimistic that he has the ability to play qb on the bc subdivision level. We had two qbs left on the team when lamaison was signed. I think we reached because we needed a third qb for practice purposes.

its really way to early to answer this question because it will be a new offense. i know we still have the same OC but i think Chaney will want to change some things up. i know that it will be an interesting spring and summer and IMO it will be a 3 way battle NS,TB,MS

Okay, I think it's safe to say there'll be no more QB's coming in.

This leaves us with (and tell me if I'm wrong):
Matt Simms
Tyler Bray
Nick Stevens
Nick Lamaison (sp?)

Who do you guys think will start next year?
I'm thinking Stevens is the incumbent. He was on the team last year, so he's worked win Chaney. What scares me is that he didn't throw so well when he was on the field.

Bray (IMO) doesn't have that great of a chance to start (unless it's late in the season/injuries/blowouts).

I don't know what all Lamaison (again, sp?) can do; I've never watched him, and same with Matt Simms.

What do you think?
I'm thinking Tyler Bray will be our starter for next season. I just don't think Stevens will be able to do anything for us, I think new offense and get Bray in there early that way when he's a senior it would be a walk in the park for him...

Does anyone know if we will keep the same blocking scheme? I hope so, I see the formations and such changing, but when you have a stable of backs like we got and being in the conference that we are in, you gotta run the ball. I don't see the offense changing that much.

Bray would be broken in half. He is 6'6 and weighs 185lbs and would be behind a rebuilt line. I think the chart will look like this
1. Stephens
2. Simms
3. Laimison
RS Bray
and if Nash Nune comes he'll be holding Da'Rick Rogers helmet

Another reason to hate on X for getting rid of Fulmer's top QB recruit because he didn't want us to say his success had anything to do with Fulmer!

I don't know much about Nash Nance and certainly don't mind there being a little more competition at quarterback, but doesn't Tyler Bray just seem so much more "Peyton" like? I have watched some of Nash Nance's highlight videos and I wasn't that impressed with him, but DaRick Rogers on the other hand... whoooaaaa....

I'm pulling for simms on this one. I was very impressed with his game footage on youtube. Granted ju'co' and SEC are two completely different levels of ball but if he can adjust he could be deadly. Nothing against ol' Nick but he's had his chance to shine on the field. Not impressed. I'm excited about bray too though, kinda reminds me of Ken Dorsey.
