Next Year

The schedule is super weak next year. If Pruitt is decent at his job we are in a bowl game next season. We lose hardly anyone, Missouri, Vandy and Kentucky have major losses. Then non-conf schedule is high school level. 7-5 should be the floor next year.
We are also super weak! How is it a good thing that we lose hardly anyone?!

3 wins is what I see, 5 max. There are no phenoms coming in this recruiting class that magically make a big enough impact on the field for this team to not be terrible again.

I don't know what the record will be but I suspect the bitchin and gripin with Pruitt getting his share goes to a higher level if we don't win eight games. I expect a record less than that will start the coaching search threads and probably John Gruden having failed in Oakland will be the main man.

As the bad apples begin to be purged and the talent is upgraded and the current players get developed........this thing will start to take off.. JG is the only concern. Maybe 2 teams in the SEC would trade for him. Kentucky and Arkansas. He is not the answer. You can have everything and a below average QB and it doesn't matter. That is why in a few years this will be rolling. But next year???? You just played the hardest schedule in America. We had our defensive line playing 70-75 snaps. The great ones play 45. Need to recruit and get a rotation. It is coming.

8-4 minimum and 9-3 is possible..

I have seen two instances in which it is possible to have a below average QB and still win. Trent Dilfer but Baltimore had a big running game and a big defense. the other instance is Ken Dorsey at U of M. Miami had a good defense and running game also.
But you are correct, it is rare that you can win with a below average QB but Pruitt is going to stick with JG, regardless of who the other QB's on the team are.

Again, only 4 sure wins on the schedule. Don't kid yourself.

Georgia State (win)
BYU (win)
Chattanooga (win)
Florida (loss) - they'll be better next year with the development of Emory Jones.
Georgia (loss)
Mississippi State (swing) - They lose Fitzgerald but it'll be year 2 under the new staff and Bob Shoop's defense is solid. Fitzgerald's replacement doesn't suck.
Alabama (loss)
South Carolina (loss) - They're consistently competitive against good teams. Bentley returns and Muschamp has owned us.
UAB (win) - Call it a win, but don't sleep on the Blazers.
Kentucky (swing) - We caught them at the perfect time this year. I had a thread predicting the win, but it wasn't because I thought we had the better team. It'll be interesting to see how they rebuild after losing a bunch of seniors.
Missouri (loss) - they dominated us in the trenches and have blown us out in back-to-back seasons.
Vanderbilt (swing) - they also dominated us in the trenches, but I have less confidence in their ability to replace a quarterback. Also think Ke'Shawn Vaughn enters the NFL Draft averaging 7 ypc this year.

4 wins
5 losses
3 swing games

I see BYU as a loss for us..... I see 3 likely wins.. I think we have a shot at beating Missouri though, because Lock is gone. Pocket qb's killed us this season.

The problem is not our schedule it's our lack of talent

We could be like Notre Dame was in 2010 and play a softer schedule, then make it to the National Championship game and have an embarrassing loss......... I prefer to do it the right way though

All depends on the QB situation and our lines on offense and defense plus recruiting...if we did go 9-3 with a bowl win (10-3) it would be the biggest turnaround in college football from the previous 2 seasons. Pruitt likely gets an extension and a raise should this happen. I’m playing it safe and predicting 7 wins. Too many unknowns at this point on the roster. So there you have it. Go Vols!!!!

Agree on the schedule BUT most of the players that replace the leavers are better than the ones that we have coming back IMO. CJP better have guys coming in/ developed enough to replace some of our returning starters otherwise we are just chasin our tails. Some folks act like these teams that lose players are gonna just have empty roster spots...that's not how this works, that's not how any of this works. I would be tickled to death in 2019 to finish 7-5 because I expect 6-6 until our talent level blooms.

It looks easier but we lose too many off our D line and our O line won't improve fast enough plus our other problems and lack of good players for depth is a serious problem too.

6-6 and back to a bowl will be a decent season and anything over that are reasons to be a bit more hopeful for the following season.

Need lots of good linemen that are fast, strong, develop fast and have that much needed mean streak.

VFL...GBO!!!

Yep. Vandy shows there’s very little “coaching up” going on too. Mediocrity will continue.

I will say this now if TN can’t beat Florida or Vandy next year then maybe Pruitt was the wrong hire but maybe I’m rushing too judgment too soon....thoughts?

We have to give him 3-4 years to rebuild but the last two games showed us that his ceiling may be 8 or 9 wins even with a better roster. Just not getting as much out of them as is needed in the current SEC.

Teams usually see the biggest step forward from year 2 to year 3 under new a new HC. I see 2019 being a 7-5 year, and the 2020 being 9-3. In 2021 is the one that I am expecting to see us make a run for the playoff, but that will be based on player development and who the OC is by that point. Here's hoping!!

I think he was the wrong hire and it has nothing to do with his ability as a football coach, its timing. I have little doubt Pruitt will develop into a very good HFC one day. What this program needed was a proven winner. Due to several reasons including, an admin nit dedicated to winning, donors that at too involved, a starved fan base, and a less than steller roster along with constant embarassment and turnover amoung the coaching staff. We needed a coach that has the equity to say "what I fo works" and we needed to see a great deal of improved development in year one, regardless of whether it lead to wins or not. We didnt. Actually we heard, I cant do a better job until I have better players. This is a disaster scenerio waiting to happen.
Perhaps they hire a a rock star oc like Freeze and we see a huge turn next year. But I dont see that happening as you then have two proven coaches running the show for a new head coach.
So sadly, it looks like the trend will continue. I may be wrong, but ill believe it when I see it. Until then its groundhog day at UT.
