New report says Microsoft's next console likely to be revealed at E3 2013, Lionhead already developing Fable Next - GameSpot

The gap between the launch of Microsoft's original Xbox and the debut of its successor was almost exactly four years. The gap between the company's second and third console launches could end up twice as long.

The monolithic Xbox 360 could stand tall for another couple of years.

Develop reports that chip manufacturers and software middleware firms expect the next Xbox to be announced at E3 2013, with a launch following in time for the holidays. This would be an announcement-to-launch timeline similar to the Xbox 360, which was revealed just six months before the console hit retail in November 2005.

The report also suggests that Lionhead is already at work on "Fable Next" for the forthcoming console. Various other development houses, including EA and Crytek, have also been rumored to have preliminary development hardware.

These reports follow a recent confirmation that various Microsoft employees are already on the next console team. Several LinkedIn accounts for Microsoft employees listed them as working on the hardware, with Jeff Faulkner pinpointed as creative director on "Xbox Next Gen."

Hmm. Interested to see what it'll be like. Games already have unbelievable graphics. Maybe they will integrate Windows even more, with cloud-based game storage, storing/syncing media from Windows to Xbox device. Maybe even a web browser.

Report: New Xbox to Launch in 2013 - Xbox360 News at IGN

While previous rumors hinted at a 2012 reveal for the next Xbox, new reports indicate that it may be held off until 2013. Develop has heard from multiple industry sources, including chip manufacturers and middleware firms, that the console's reveal will come at E3 2013, with a late 2013 launch to follow.

The launch would likely be simultaneous for all territories, but that doesn't necessarily rule out a 2014 release in some countries. The initial launch is expected to come by the 2013 holiday season, but few analysts expect it to come any earlier than that.

Develop also reports on several other rumors that lend credibility to an upcoming console launch. Namely that Lionhead Studios is currently working on a project known internally as Fable Next, which is expected to launch on a new console. Another source reports that EA has rudimentary next-generation console technology already (which EA has denied).

For now, all of these are rumors, and Microsoft has declined to comment on any of them. If a new console does launch in late 2013, it would coincide with the predicted 2014 release Unreal Engine 4, which Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told us about last month.

IMO "The Cloud" is the future of gaming. Look at the money companies will save with eliminating mass production and shipping of games.

IMO, with the new Xbox comes the same type of marketplace but instead of older game releases, all Xbox games will be available to download. The option to rent will be integrated with a 3 day time limit on the game, eliminating the Blockbuster-type stores and Gamefly services. Microsoft will make Windows even more integrated into their new game console. Media streaming will be more in-depth with the ability to download media from a music store directly to your console (basically same format as Apple's iCloud). No one will ever need to go to a store to buy a game, every Xbox title will be readily available for purchase/download on the Marketplace. Maybe even cloud-based games to where downloads aren't even needed. They will be streamed.

The only thing is who wants to download a 30GB game? It'd take me a whole day just to download a game. I'm not sure if broadband is there yet for cloud gaming.

Hopefully the new one breaks if you look at it wrong or the earth spins.

Possibly streaming games, like Netflix does with movies. No need to download. Xbox Live will recognize that you have purchased the license to the full game. Not sure how all this would work, but that's why I'm not working at Microsoft. Just a thought on the next gen with all this "cloud" based stuff popping up everywhere. All I know is, is it would take a ton of server space from Microsoft. Probably make it an extra fee for Xbox live members to stream a game rather than fully downloading or buying in a store.

Methinks Microsoft will do a better job on quality assurance with this next Xbox launch.

To me streaming games would be even worse. I hate onLive, because you now have to deal with input lag instead of just normal server lag. Imagine playing a game like BF3 or MW3. Now you not only have to deal with lag to the server, but input lag to the cloud as well. Instead of getting 1-2 ms response to the console when pressing your controller to fire at the enemy it turns into 200-300 ms lag from pressing your controller to telling the cloud "Hey, fire my gun" which then has to forward that onto the game server. It's another level of indirection that I'm not confident current broadband capabilities can handle.
