If ETSU had come in to this game with Gilplaye and Bates I would have expected it to be a good game. With virtually zero post now (They didn't do a lot of scoring but did supply good defense and rebounding) I am afraid this game will get ugly fast. Banks is at best a slender 4 at 6'7 stuck at the 5 and Wilson all 6'4 of him has played a whole lot of 5.

Josh and Armani should drive to the basket in this game. ETSU could be in foul trouble early,

Butler and Kansas State good enough? Southern Miss beat Missouri at Missouri in the NIT last year, something that Tennessee couldn't do with Stokes and crew, was that good enough? What is laughable is you not giving any credit to the 25 conferences with one bid especially after the Myrtle Beach School Coastal Carolina waltzed into Auburn a couple of weeks ago and handed Bruce Pearl and Company the big L!

No, claiming that a win over a bad team somehow absolves your team from three point defense problems is laughable. UT is 320th out of 345 teams in three point defense, that is a problem. If your team strategy is to force teams to shoot threes, than maybe do a better job of defending the shot you are giving to them. Ya'lls wings are athletic enough, put them in a position to close out better on shooters. Keep allowing teams to shoot 38% and you are gonna get bit in the ass a few times.

Iona has played 12 games. They have a guy who has taken 100 hitting .410 a guy with 78 .449 and a guy with 77 hitting .455. so they have taken 355 and hit 111
They are basically taking 21 a game and hitting 9.25 on .435 shooting as a team as a whole they are shooting .429

ETSU's Top 3 guys have taken 225 and hit 94 in 10 games. That is taking 22.5 a game and hitting 9.4 on
.418 shooting. As a a team as a whole they are shooting .421

Wow congrats..looks like ETSU is a few percentage points behind Iona. pretty damn close.

Thanks for proving my point

From what little I know, it seems we need to guard the 3's a bit tighter Wednesday night than they "did" against T State. They don't have much of an inside to throw to at this time and I figure OUR big guys > THEIR big guys.

Murray Bartow is a good coach and if we can limit turnovers and second shot opportunities, UT should win.

It will be interesting to see how large the crowd will be for this New Year Eve game.

GBO!!!!!!

Bad luck!
First, the team lost big man Ron Giplaye (6'6", 250 lb) to a season ending injury (ACL). Now, they'll be without another post, Alex Bates (6'9", 225 lb), because of academic reasons. We're not sure how long Bates will be off the court, but for the guys who are still on it, the pressure is on. "Two weeks ago when we had won five in a row, the two guys who had played all the minutes inside were Ron Giplaye and Alex Bates," said Head Coach Murry Bartow. "Now we don't have either of them. It's certainly affected our depth and really affected us inside. We just don't have the strength and the height we had two weeks ago."
I hope Giplaye gets that 6th year of eligibility, if he wants it. That guy has had a run of bad luck.

CSU Bakersfield lol...Zo has a wtf L every year.
That's much worse than Coastal Carolina going into Auburn and pulling the upset. At least they were 9-3 and in the NCAA tournament last year. Cal State Bakersfield was 2-10 when they went into Berkeley and upset California. They had just come off a whopping 13-19 record last year. Those boys must have taken the week off with the patsy coming in!

At least we know CSB didn't have a player shooting the 3 real well...never happens with Zo scheming. :)

I' m going to be on pins and needles watching this game. I hope etsu have their worst shooting this season. This defense or the execution of it has not shown me it can defend the 3 ball. I think we will win, but it will be a nailbiting close one.

Hey guys, I'm an ETSU alum and fan, looking forward to this game for quite some time. I would have been certain of a win for us until 2 weeks ago, when we lost 2 of our 3 big men. We still have a 6'11" FR sitting on the bench, and coach is trying to red-shirt him, so I don't expect to see him play tomorrow. I think it will be close, and I think if we shoot the 3 well, we can pull it out.

Help me understand something though. How is it that some of you guys who actually graduated from ETSU would still pull for UT in this one? I can't understand turning my back on my own school, even if I followed another team for football. Not trying to inflame, just don't understand how folks do that.

Zo has accomplished a first at Cal. He lost to a team that had never beaten a PAC 12 team in their history! :thud:
What's your point?
Do you think Donnie's never had any bad losses?
While at Morehead in 2010-2011 the same year he beat Louisville, he lost to Eastern Illinois a 7-20 team RPI 317.
Also had losses to Austin Peay and Tn State.
What's Zo got to do with ETSU?

Welcome to the board :hi:
I'm sure all are hoping for a competitive and injury-free game. I certainly can't answer for the ETSU grads that are planning on pulling for UT in the game, but as someone who grew up near Knoxville, I was a Vol fan before I ever finished elementary school. Perhaps some of the grads that you mentioned grew up in similar conditions..

I would say a lot of people who went to ETSU were big UT fans their whole lives.

The reason Martin is gone now is because he had so many of these type losses with 3 ALL SEC players in his starting lineup. No excuse for that in my book! The NCAA getting in by the skin of their teeth and making a run had everything to do with the quality of the players and nothing to do with the coaching as shown by this loss. Gary Parrish said the same:
"Perhaps some coaches were too caught-up in the final week of the NFL's regular season to notice, but California spent Sunday losing at home to CSU Bakersfield, which entered with a 2-10 record that had it ranked 273rd nationally at KenPom. Bottom line, there's just no way to justify ranking a school with zero top-30 wins and a loss as bad as that loss -- especially not on the Monday following the Sunday on which that bad loss occurred."

I am guessing there will not be many folks at this game. How well do they police the lower levels if I wanted to move down after mid-way through the 1st half???

There will be more here than the last 3 games. Expect a lot of ETSU fans. It gives people who live in Johnson City an excuse to come to Knoxville :p

They are good, but the Vols should beat them in a close one. I thinks Murry Bartow is a very good coach. I'm surprised he's still at ETSU.

Prior to the loss of the ETSU big men, I would have given the Bucs a good chance to win this game. Now, the Vols should win handily.

Against typical mid-major competition, Jalen Riley is an excellent scorer. Against power conference teams, this isn't always true. Despite his small size, the best part of his game is driving and drawing fouls. If UT can avoid their penchant for fouling and simply move their feet on defense, their length will frustrate Riley. This often results in him trying to do too much, leading to turnovers.

Wilson and Rembert are both spot-up shooters and not much of a threat to penetrate. If they have an off shooting night, this game will get ugly. If they shoot lights out, they can keep it respectable.

Petey McClain is solid running the team, but is no threat to score. Sophomores Devin Harris and A.J. Merriweather are athletic hustlers, fun to watch, but they need a little more experience and polish. Isaac Banks will be undersized and overmatched.

I would say that Bartow is a mediocre to sometimes-good coach. He has hit the mid-major sweet spot for job security. His teams are never bad enough to get him fired and never good enough for a bigger school to hire him away.

When will you realize the whole season and postseason are what matter in basketball? A bad loss or two happens. CDT has and will have some himself. It doesn't matter if the year overall and the postseason are good. Same with Zo. Who care about a bad loss if we still finished better than projected? This isn't football.

Maybe if the Zosciples weren't so glib on 10 point victories under CDT, this wouldn't have been so delicious? :dunno:

There really aren't any Zo disciples. But there are those like myself who won't go out of theway to downplay what he did and bash him at every turn. We also won't lie and say things like CDT has a more exciting offense when historically and this year CDT has had low scoring slow paced teams. Another example was saying Martin couldn't take a depleted roster and beat a top 15 team. Not only did Martin do that his first year with a similar roster, he beat a way better team than Butler who probably won't end up ranked.
