Next gen gaming on a 4K TV

I'm planning on buying a 4K TV this month. Does anyone else have one and use their PS4/XBox one on it? How does it look? Next Gen is only capable of 1080p isn't it?

For now, yep. Don't expect to find any 4k broadcasting for awhile either.

I got burnt going after new tech with the active shudder 3d tvs

I'm so glad I held off on getting a 3dtv. I'm a sucker for new TV tech. I'm trying to hold off on 4k as well. I figure I'll get a lot more bang for my buck in 2 years.

Right now, a high-end 1080p plasma or LED/LCD is going to look far better than a similarly priced entry-level 4k TV. Hold off!

Unless you have a top-of-the-line desktop GPU, there's really no point in getting a 4K TV for gaming. Consoles aren't capable of those resolutions. Now, granted, that doesn't mean you can't get a 4K TV and enjoy 1080p on it with your PS4/Xbone. You're just living in overkill land until the next generation of consoles are among us. That could be anywhere from 3-5 years from now. Again, 4K TV is only going to show its worth for 4K blu-ray movies and PC gaming for the next few years. And to be honest, 4K resolutions don't make a great game. 1080p is perfectly fine for consoles.

Many blurays are now releasing 4k supported picture. Not sure how big of a difference it makes but that's really the only benefit I sed.

I can only echo what others have said. Now is not the time to buy 4K. There are MUCH better (and more affordable) 1080p TV's to be had right now and like other's have said, very little is out there that takes advantage of the bump in resolution.

Agreed, first Gen PC graphics cards are really the only 4k outputs releasing right now

Here to echo what has been said. With most console titles releasing at native 720p-1080p (and everything in between) 4k will not make your game look prettier. It will have the opposite effect.

Exactly. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I don't even believe NEXT gen will be pushing 4K, at least not for console gaming. I guarantee you next gen will be all about pushing a stable 1080p@60fps across the board. Plus I still think 4k is a hard sell because it's not like going from standard definition to high definition. Nobody is looking at their 1080p displays and saying "Wow this looks like ****. Time to upgrade."

Besides that, there's so much more that goes into making a great display than just resolution. I wouldn't take anything for my 1080p Panasonic VT60 plasma! It's still king in terms of black levels, contrast ratio, color accuracy, motion resolution, etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys. For gaming and sports, because that's many what I use my TV for. Which is better 120hz of 240hz? Would 240hz have that soap opera effect?

definitely the higher refresh rate is better - but I've always gone with 120 cause of the low prices. most bang for the buck

Next gen is still 5+ years away. I think it will absolutely have "UHD" support. We've already had 2 generations at the current resolutions.

You're absolutely right about the difference, though. Even with 4k content, you aren't going to notice much difference unless it's a 50"+ display and you have a pretty high-end set. There's a lot that makes a nice picture that is as important, if not more so, than resolution. In a cheap 4k display, you would get a better picture sticking with 1080p most likely.

I thought I read somewhere that Direct and Dish are about a year or so a way from having 4K channels. I think Direct has some 4K movies available. I'm a sucker for TV's. I didn't fall for the 3D trend but the 4K trend I think I will. The picture looks amazing. Every time I go to Bestbuy I go over to the 4K TV's and stand in awe.

Eh, I'll believe it when I see it. Hell we still don't even have universal 1080p support now and when we do, it's usually at 30fps. If UHD is supported next gen it won't be at 60fps. Plus I'm not sure if MS and Sony will be willing to invest in the kind of hardware it will take to push 4K @ 60fps. They're all about making the hardware cost-efficient now. Gone are the old days of putting out super powerful consoles at a loss and trying to make the money back on software.

Personally I'd be just fine with universal 1080p/60fps support across the board.

Did you know that 8K is in development right now too? It's like, when does it ever end?

8K is essentially done in development. Sharp and LG already have prototypes being beta tested. Here's the thing though. I'd imagine 8K will be the limit for consumers. The whole reason of having resolutions above 4K is to remove discernible pixels from human vision on large screens. Typically your high quality screens that are under 40 inches are already difficult to discern pixels at 1080p. Screens between 40 and 80 inches hardly show pixels at 4K. 8K is really going to be for monster home screens that are larger than 80 inches. Perhaps very large outdoor commercial screens may yet have even higher resolutions in the future, but the whole process starts to become impractical for the majority of consumers as no human has the vision of a bald eagle.
