Next gen console power (PS5 and Xbox Series X)

Lot of technical talk in here that’s a bit over my head, but you guys all seem to know what you’re talking about so I’ll ask for some advice. Right now I’ve got the Xbox One X. The only games I really ever play are the yearly installments of FIFA and Call of Duty. Is the upgrade to the Series X going to be such a leap forward that it’s worth it for me to expend a lot of effort trying to track one down around launch (I didn’t preorder), or is only going to be a modest improvement at this point? I don’t think this year’s FIFA is even getting a true next gen version but COD is.

I know a lot of people never used it, but I’m disappointed the Series X doesn’t have the HDMI passthrough for my Directv box. Since I live in a neighborhood where Comcast, with their draconian data cap, is my only high speed choice, actual cord cutting will never be an option for me. It’s nice being able to have everything run through one machine and switch seamlessly.

Sounds like you should be fine to wait until after the holiday rush. XSX looks like it's going to be a really solid machine, but it will take a while before it really separates itself from XOX. Besides non-PC folks who want to play MS Flight Simulator, I can't really think of a reason to fight the crowds before 2021, maybe the new Halo...?

That’s kind of what I expected to hear. I remember being very underwhelmed by the difference between late X360 games and early XOne games. Sure, it was an improvement, but not the mind blowing stuff that I remember from previous hardware upgrades. IMO, the One X still looks and runs really good.

Also, does anybody know why in the year 2020 there still isn’t a wireless mic for the Xbox One? I realize a lot of people use wireless gaming headsets with mics built in, and that using a mic has fallen out of favor for casual play, but still. It seems like there would be enough of a market to justify selling one. The Xbox 360 released with a wireless mic back in 2005.

Halo isn't coming out til next year.

Extreme heat stress is what ultimately led to the red ring of death on the Xbox 360. Hopefully Microsoft learned from that. A console running really hot on its own isn't a bad thing if the components are capable of withstanding it. I believe the issue with the 360 was that the console would get really hot during use, then when turned off, the fans would also turn off right away and the console would continue baking at a super high temperature as it slowly cooled to room temp.

PS5 Teardown video. Some interesting stuff here.

A few thoughts...

1.) I like the fact that the base actually screws into the console when standing vertical. I was concerned that the footprint of the base was too small for the size of the console but having it actually screw in gives it more reinforcement.

2.) The two "vacuum holes" to vacuum dust out of the console is a nice touch! That should make cleaning/maintenance of the console fairly easy.

3.) Overall access to everything seems much simpler than it was on PS4. Removing and vacuuming dust out of the fan looks to be much easier. I'm sure businesses who do console repair will appreciate this.

4.) Holy **** that heatsink is massive (so is the fan)!

5.) Removable panels will almost certainly guarantee that we will see customized panels. Sony would be foolish not to capitalize on this.

6.) SSD expansion looks to be extremely easy and accessible.

I hope they learned their lesson on that. I had several 360s fail on me. It's no small part of what drove me back to Sony this gen. It may well be fine. But it makes me want to wait and see before buying a new xbox. I've been "burned" before.

Look at the size of that thing, lol. Gonna look so good under my TV and make my girlfriend so mad (she's a minimalist).

Yeah but to be fair, I think the guy doing the teardown is like 4'3" LOL!

This will be the first console I've ever owned where I stand it vertically. It obviously will not fit inside my cabinet so it's going to sit next to it on a small stand.

One thing's for sure, Sony went above and beyond when it comes to system cooling. Using liquid metal instead of thermal paste, along with the size of the heatsink and fan and the overall size and breathability of the console itself, we shouldn't be experiencing overheating/loud fan issues.

It's a beautiful machine, definitely deserves to be out where it can be seen.

As an added feature, the side panels can be used as shields in combat. Just in case you need to build a Phalanx when the barbarian hordes invade.

Saw a couple of comparison videos. Xbox one vs Xbox series X. Both were running Destiny 2. The Xbox one was actually running hotter than the series x. That console was rather bullet proof. I don't think it will be an issue.

I really like the removable panels on the PS5. There's a lot of potential there for custom ones. Check out these fan renders...

There are multiple reports saying it's literally hot to the touch. That's not just when playing games either. It's a constant thing, even in standby. It's probably fine initially (so was the 360), but will it degrade components or thermal paste, over time? Also you'll want to be carful where you put the thing. If you stick it in a cabinet, that's just going to aggravate the problem.
It may end up being fine, but I'm going to have see that before dropping 500 bucks on a machine from a company that's had overheating issues with it's consoles before. At least it doesn't literally catch fire, like the original Xbox.

That kind of excitement seems right up your alley :)

My PS4 Pro has heat issues. High powered PC's put off a lot of heat. My cell phone gets hot in my hand when playing a game. Heat and computer parts go hand and hand. It will be fine.
