'Call of Duty' Targets a Monthly Fee - WSJ.com

Absolutely ridiculous, but keep in mind:

In an interview, Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about pushback from gamers about the Call of Duty Elite fee because players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service.

Still, they lied back when they said they would not introduce a subscription service. And this is just the beginning. You can bet down the road they will try to make the addicts pay to play online.

Its the new racket, just like EA. The new purchase price doesn't cover all features of the game.

BS, but people pay for the crap, so its going to keep on going.

It'll be interesting to see what exactly the feature/service will offer, the price, and whether or not it'll split the community. Regardless, Activision is definitely trying to see what they can get away with.

Sucks for the industry but I don't feel bad for the customers, stop buying this garbage if you don't like getting bent over.

Select Game Mode Type: Subscription

seriously though, activision's president's been going on about this idea since at least a year ago (and he already accidently revealed it - to much backlash - about a month or so ago)

but then again, everyone keeps gobbling up every single $15 map pack like hotcakes, stuff like this eventually happens

Pretty smart IMO. People will pay it and I don't think it will hurt them at all in the long run.

I agree, it's one of the last capitalist socities we have left that the government hasn't tried to control. If we don't like it, we don't have to buy it and I'm sure they'll stop it if enough people don't. But, like Cat says plenty of people will buy it so they'll be just fine at the end. I don't like it but I'll wait and see what it includes first.

On a side note, I hope they don't make TOO much of a killing on it cause then everyone will do it and then eventually, the gov't will take it over and we'll all be completely screwed......

I'm confused...so you don't have to pay for the subscription to play online or you do?

"...because players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service."

This tells me you don't have to pay to play online. You may not get all of the bells and whistles, but whatever...

You don't have to pay. If you do you unlock everything. This makes me not want cod this year.

If the elite package gives you better guns and an advantage over free players than screw it. I am sure that they will sell millions of copies but my cash isn't going to them. Kind of in a wait and see mode. Gears 3 will be out before that so my shooter fix will be good.

Oh yeah. Will be all over that one. Have they set a release date? Also, I know u guys hated it but the new operation flashpoint is out next week. The coop campaign was fun on the last one. Online MP....not so much. I am going to give it a try.

I played operation flashpoint red river and it is the worst shooter I think I have ever played. I would research it before I bought it. Also its been out for a couple of weeks.

If the game is good enough, I would pay $5/month or less to play. If it is anything like the last couple MW/COD games, I probably will play it about 2-3 months and trade it in.

The squad leader aspect of Flashpoint was great, I dont think anyone understood that concept though.

But the command controls were clunky, and the AI was horrid. I'm afraid they dropped the ball so badly that they'll never get a gold player base, even of they nail it this time

7/11 but I am pretty sure the game released a couple of weeks ago, unless I am terribly off here.

I will look around and see. I haven't really paid attention to it to be honest. Just knew it was an early summer release

Just depends on what you get for the "premium" fee. I may or may not do it. Ill wait and see.

An additional monthly fee to play any game that I pay 60 bucks for is lame.....monthly fee, that irks me.

Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Yeah, I can't see how this will help them. This will piss a lot of people off and make a handful of people happy.

Yep, sell an inferior product for $60 and convince people that they're lucky to only have to pay $5 a month extra for the full version.
