"New York Times: Vols' Hiring of Kiffin Exemplifies College Football's Race Barrier"

If you expect to find truth in reporting in a rag like the NY Times then you need to think again. The Times once stood as the Nation's premier newspaper, but that was some time ago my friend. The NY Times only has slightly more credibility than the Enquirer now days.

over the weekend they printed a letter written by the mayor of paris on their website proclaiming distain over caroline kennedy becomming a senator. the letter wasn't verified until after the letter was published.

it does appear that their standards have diminished over time.

Like I said earlier, Uncle John's Big Book of Bathroom Trivia has more quality reading than the NYT. The NYT is good for one thing in the bathroom, though, in case you run out of the other kind of paper...

We have a black President Elect and the race card is still being played??

Now you know that just wouldn't have been nearly as much fun for the times! What would a good racially themed article be without a dig at the south?

I think that has more to do with the fact they they know the Syracuse job sucks. UT was just used as an example of a big time job that didn't hire everyone's favorite black coaching candidate. Has Gill commented on any of this? Was he even interested in either job? Someone has to have more information than rumors about his wife and a Charles Barkley statement.

Having lived most of my life in Ohio and a little bit in Tennessee, I have no compunction about saying I notice a heck of a lot more racism in daily life here than there.

Of course, I also had a lot of people asking me dumb questions after I came back. "Are the roads paved? Do people wear shoes? Can anyone read? Is there indoor plumbing or electricity? Did you see any lynchings?" And mind you, these were asked in a completely serious manner as well.

Not sure I agree. The Syracuse program, while currently in the toilet, has historically been good and can get back. However, it wasn't as juicy of a target as a couple of good ole boy institutions below the mason dixon line.

It is especially ironic that they didn't mention the 'cuse since Gill would have been a good fit there.

Does anyone know Art Shells record at Oakland. Watching a Raider game and them repeatedly showing Al Davis is like watching Return of the Living Dead.

Do they know the Civil war is over?

I get that question all the time.

This thread reminds me of the package deal of Wade Houston and his son Allan. I hope this package deal of CLK and Monte works out better.

Well the first one didn't work out too good, cause they both left in 4 years. Graduation sucks in one way, and is great in another.

I will take this one.:hi:

NYT should give a full page spread on why Syracuse didnt hire a coach of color. Good for the goose I say.

The Race Card is a sickening issue. Most schools in modern America, could care less about the skin color of their coaches. Schools want to win irrespective of the color of their headcoach.
If a school decides to hire a particular coach solely or even primarily because he is white, then that is outright racism. If a school decides to hire a coach solely or even primarily because he is black, then that too is outright racism. In like manner if a coaching candidate is ruled out because of their skin color then that is racism.
Similarly, if anyone vote for Obama because he is black, that is racism. If anyone voted against him because he is black, then that too is racism.

Bur in reality, who outside New York or the ultra-leftist ilk in this country puts any credence in anything printed by the NYT.

Would you rather us read the Washington Times or the New York Post? There is crap in every editorial page out there. Not to say there isn't something to this, although their picking on Tennessee is off base.

Fact of the matter is you should not hire a guy because he is black, And not hire him because he is. You can't expect anyone to hire a guy just because he is a minority.
Gms and ADs get fired because of hirings they make that don't work. They shouldn't be forced to hire anyone, that is their job.

???????????????? I'm not sure I understand what you said.:dunno:

As soon as Barkley mentioned the word "resumé ," I knew we were going to get roped into this. And you know what? Maybe it's justified. I never heard us seriously linked to a minority candidate. (A phone call to Lovie Smith does not count as serious.)

Like most of you, I don't care what color our coach's skin is. I just want to hire the best guy for the job. But if I hire the coach I think is the best guy, and you hire the guy you think is best, and Jim hires somebody he thinks is best, and 100 other guys hire the coaches they think are best, and every single one of them turns out to be a white guy -- well, at some point it becomes obvious that the selection process is seriously flawed, and it's important to talk about why that might be the case. I don't really have a problem with our name coming up as part of that discussion.

Another excellent, reasoned post. Thank you.

Of the current 117 Division I-A head football coaches, five are African-American. In Division I-AA, there are two African-American head football coaches and one Native American head football coach. Less than 2.7 percent of head football coaches in all NCAA divisions are ethnic minorities, excluding the historically black colleges and universities.

you notice one race that does not push the race card

Johnny "John" Chavis (born October 16, 1956 in Dillon, South Carolina), commonly known as The Chief, is the former defensive coordinator, linebacker Coach and associate head football coach at the University of Tennessee, where he has been since 1989. Chavis is the only Native American that is currently a Coordinator or Head Coach for a major college or NFL team.
