Newspapers across the country are struggling and due to the internet are becoming a dying breed. Printing stories such as this generates paper sales so take it with a grain of salt and move on. The only newspaper that has not lost ground the past 5 years is USA Today because of its national contracts with Hotels.

The New York Times blows stories all the time. They will have to eat their words yet again when the Vols have success in the program.

i findi it interesting, and humorous, that in an article about race, the argument made against one institution is laid out in simple black and white, with no room for the context of the situation.

Tennessee went thru a month long process. Auburn a week. Tennessee fired Fulmer with 4 weeks left in the football season. Auburn the week after the season was over.

Tennessee got to make a decision on who they wanted.......meaning.......we got to choose. All i can do is trust that they went thru the process interviewed everyone they thought was qualified and hired the best person for the job.

and as qualifications go........Kiffin has 6 years with a college super power USC as OC, and he's been a head coach in the NFL.

all due respect to Gill, having one good year at Buffalo is nice........but i think if i go over the entire tenure----recuriting, relationships, references, direction etc........

we did what we thought was best for our program and, until proven otherwise, was not race driven.

NY Times prints either out right fiction or stories that provoke anger just to sell papers. I could care less what they print.

From what is reported on ESPN the problem with Turner Gill is not him or his qualifications but with his wife. Apparently she is very outspoken and made it very clear that she would never live in Auburn again and did not like the South at all. That could be hurting his chances of getting hired.

I've also heard the fact she is white hasn't helped gill's cause. The race card is overplayed. Chose the best coach, i wouldn't care if he was blue.

I do not know why he interviewed if that were the case; maybe for the experience. Is that something that you could link us to or are you paraphrasing something you heard?

Why would it matter what the slime NYT thinks about Tennessee.

It doesn't, bit we sure whine a lot about being hated by every outsideR on earth. Maybe if we didn't constantly live down to their low expectations of us, we could change some minds about our reputation.

He was probably trying to leverage a pay raise or get more attention from other D1 programs. If Auburn interviewed him then I'm sure some of the lesser D1 programs would love to get him. I think he'd be a great fit in the ACC or Big East.

It is extremely humoorous that so many want to take the time to call out the NYT for the story and then act like we don't care how they view us.

I think he will be a great fit anywhere he goes.

When did Turner Gill and/or his wife ever live in Auburn Alabama?

Well said, Jake! And you too, Big Papa! The one thing I learned from this last election is to take what you read with a grain of salt. Whether it's printed media, blogs, or even message boards - it's all just someone with an agenda - some blatantly biased, some genuinely questioning, some poking fun, but it's still just a guy (or gal) at a keyboard.

It always has to be race...it can't simply be the fact that Kiffen could bring better coordinators and positions coaches...or could recruit to an all new level. It couldn't be the fact that Kiffen is intimately familiar with USC football and that is the direction we wanted to take in our own program.

That is not the sort of logic that creates controversy and gives journalist and sports reporters job security. It is no hidden secret that the economy woes have trickled down to every facet of employment and some of these so called reporters whether it is TV or newspaper are stooping to new lows to keep their job. I can't say I blame them 100% but that does not mean I have to place much credit in what they are saying.

If Auburn and UT were located in say...mid-state New York, this would not be an issue. The main reason the NYT came after our hire is we are in the South. Screw 'em. GO VOLS!
