New wordmark...

KISS - Keep it simple stupid
Let's hope Nike continues with this line of thinking
I like it

BUT, FWIW - I wouldn't mind seeing a mock-up of the first N having a "tail" that encroaches into the E and that E encroaching into the next...so basically keep the entire name slanted like the state silhouette.

Reminds me of typography back in the 1960's for some sci-fi publication. I'm a graphic artist and love typography, but this may have to grow on me a bit. It's not bad though. I think one thing that bothers me a little about this is that a few of the letters lack the "Tails" or cuts like the others. I dunno, it's wierd.

I actually have that mock up... it looks weirder lol

I do not like this treatment at all. The letters feel squirmy to me when I glance at this, as if they're slanted but not in a way that makes me feel confidence in the name. If this were a real concept, I'd rather they work on finding a different way to work in things. I want the name to feel imposing, to feel dominant, to feel *big*. These don't feel big. Just sort of cutesy.

I had an earlier career in graphic design, and this is a good example of conceptually clever--but doesn't work.

We've seen the idea before, but usually on just the top bar of the uppercase T. The clever-ish part is utilizing the state's shape as the unifying design theme.

But Voltopia's words get to the heart of the problem. Individually, the letters are clever, but when combined they project an impression: ..."squirmy" ..."cutesy" ...don't communicate "confidence" ...not "imposing" or "dominant."

Conceptually, the idea is superficial. The typographical inspiration goes no deeper than a map outline. It could have been designed by anyone, anywhere, who had no knowledge of the Vols, or even athletics. It conveys no content, no character, no history, no values.

Here's another problem: these letters have a feel like they could have been chiseled into clay. For Americans, that creates a cultural impression.

Pueblo ... Navajo ... Tennessee

I'd bet if you tested those three words in this typeface and asked people which ones "look right"... 90% would reject Tennessee.

Wow, so much dislike for something so simple. Yet, all that is ever called for is simple when it comes to uniforms. What do you want? People are saying bold, strong, and imposing. Yet, you would not want any of those things in a new uniform. The font is orange and white, what people scream for here, it is simple, basic, and to the point. Why is it a problem that it goes no deeper than the state outline? That's the point, to be simple yet effective. It hits on points of simplicity, speed, and up to date which are things that must be part of the Tennessee brand.
DP, correct me if I’m wrong but this is a mock-up by someone and not even the official Nike version? I say someone starts a thread so all the graphic designers can do there own version of a Tennessee word mark, and we can critique.
I’m excited to see what all Nike has for us.

Yes this is a mock up. We don't know what the full script will look like yet.

Its pretty good really. They tried to uses the shape of Tennessee in all the letters.

Not really embarrassing now. Just expected. Same goes for just about every passionate fan base.

True. It's just frustrating, it is what it is. We got Nike like we all wanted, the people that don't like it will just have to deal with it. Don't complain.

Meh. I'm a designer (or rather, I was for a while), and all I was doing was giving my emotional reaction to seeing the treatment. I'm super picky about font choice as it is, and I'd feel this way no matter if this was from Adidas, UA, Nike, or whoever. I never once wanted to switch to Nike, but I didn't call the look cutesy because I hate the change -- I just feel it's trying to be cute without really being impressive. It's just how I feel. But then, I feel that way about a lot of the Nike stuff Oregon is brandishing too. A few of their looks are seriously impressive, and the rest ... *shrug* ... cutesy.

I think the actual nike produced wordmark will be more uniform and intentional...this is really just a concept of what someone thinks it will look like....the don't is not consistent and that screws up the rythm, it will look great nike knows what they are doing

I get what you are saying. I just think it isn't over the top like everyone was so afraid of and now we actually have a wordmark. I don't know what Adidas had for us as far as wordmark and if I don't know it then it wasn't doing it's job. I'm just glad it is way more subtle than Florida's and I think it sends a clean message.

I'm not buying anything with that wordmark on it.
I might need to grab some traditional TENNESSEE shirts now, before they're gone.

It especially looks ridiculous on the basketball court.

If it's starting to grow on you, I'm guessing you didn't like it when you first saw it, but since you're a passionate Vol, you can grow to love anything orange and white that says "Tennessee" on it. That's fine, by the way. I don't dislike it as much now as I did when I first saw it.

Then I take step back and look at it again and conclude that it's lousy.

Why syh?
Because I don't like the logo?
I'm a VFL, but I'm not spending money on clothes I don't like.

This isn't replacing the Power T for goodness sakes, you act like every piece of apparel that Nike will put out will have this on it! It's just the word mark. There will be plenty of stuff that will have other Vol imagery on it.

I am just picturing everything I have that says "TENNESSEE" across the front and replacing that image with this new thing.

And I understand that, but there will be plenty of other things to choose from. We don't even know the full repertoire Nike has for us.

I never said that I would stop buying everything Vol-related.

The positive I see with Nike, and it's a big one, is recruiting, particularly basketball. The negative is concerns over the impact on tradition.
