Yeah, I looked for a giant box that could take up half my living room, but apparently they're hard to find now. I settled on my 1.2" sammy that hangs on the wall like an elegant painting, and actually adds to the room, rather than is an eyesore.

:p

It's all hype.

At least its a Samsung!
I hate the idea of hanging the TV on the wall. There is no substance to it.

As for the notion that my TV is a "giant box that takes up half my living room." It is approximately 14" deep. Unless you live in a Japanese style apartment, that doesn't come close to taking up "half the living room."

Now my 32" Sammy CRT HDTV... that sucker is like 3' deep! Was a really great TV though.

I guess you just got used to a TV being an appliance. I love my TVs as thin as possible, and I don't think I'll ever use a TV stand again. I like my installs as clean as possible.

My TV habit gets expensive, though. I may have to upgrade next year.

Amazon.com: Panasonic TH-37PX60U 37-Inch Plasma HDTV: Electronics

we went thru lots of measurements to figure out the best size to get. I remember looking at a 37" thinking it would be enough but now I have a 50" that says I had no clue about that

My dad has that exact tv. He has a small living room, so it worked out, and I would put the picture quality straight up against anything you can buy right now.

Ever since Pioneer sold off their panel rights, Panasonic plasma is the best of the best for flat panels.

fyp

But really, Samsung and Panasonic have been neck and neck for years. It appears LG has been making a push, and they may be right there soon.

Panasonic did buy a lot of Pioneer's technology, including the Kuro. I'm a Panasonic man. Doubt I'll ever buy anything Samsung again. Not a fan of them.

There's people in both camps. I buy whichever TV is the best at the time. 2 years ago it was the Sammy 860. Right now, it's the Panasonic. I like Samsungs aesthetics better, and you can always make an argument for either of the top 2 tvs depending on your priorities. The Panny PVT is well more expensive than the Sammy 8000, and their picture quality is pretty much even.

Samsung always has better energy saving, which is pretty important for plasmas, as they're hogs.

If you read CNET, then the Panasonic is the best tv of 2011, and I can't argue that, but my point was Sammy and Panny are the cream of the crop in the plasma tv market, and every year, AVS forums has a debate over which is the better tv out of the Samsung and Panasonic line.

It's pointless debating which is the better brand, though, the important thing is the two of them are head and shoulders above the rest. LG may be there in a few more years, but theres still a gap atm.

So, the OP should look at the Samsung PNC50C8000 and Panasonic TC-PVT20/25 and decide what's best for him. If budget is a concern, then look at the Samsung 7000s and the Panasonic PGTs.

This is what CNET has to say:

Ever since we tested the Panasonic TC-PVT25 series in June, we've been itching to compare it directly to Samsung's flagship 3D-compatible plasma HDTV for 2010. After finally getting the chance to review the Samsung PNC8000 series--the odds-on favorite, if there is one, to defeat the Panasonic--we can declare the verdict in this dogfight. Panasonic by a black nose.
The PNC8000 is an excellent performer, and deserves the silver medal among plasma TVs we've tested so far this year. In addition, we'd wager no other as-yet-announced TV will outperform either one in 2010. But the Samsung's crucial reproduction of black can't achieve the same inkiness as the Panasonic, so it falls short. It beats the VT25 to a greater or lesser extent in a few other areas, including overall color reproduction, bright room performance, and video processing, but none of those margins of victory are convincing enough to close the gap. The Samsung costs less, however, and its style and feature set will certainly turn heads, although for this price we'd expect to get a pair of those 3D glasses thrown in too. The VT25 might be the better performer, but the picture quality of the PNC8000 series will rightly claim its share of videophile devotees.
