Interesting. Football but won’t be surprised to see other sports follow.

I like the changes making the players wait 5 days after the new coach is hired before they can enter the portal. At least give them a shot.

So a new coach has to be named within the 5 day window? This is a stupid new rule that holds the player hostage. Teams that fire their coach during the season rarely name a replacement and just finish out the season with an interim coach already on staff. Maybe I didn't read this article correctly. Is this only is a new hire is announced? This has to be challenged immediately with a law suit. Just another way to hold players hostage because the NCAA created this entire monster themselves

Under the surface college football is a mess. IMO half of the rules they are making are probably not legally binding. It seems to me that at some point the NCAA and or the schools are going to have to incorporate and players may have to be under contract.

In other words the final stake in the heart of college football as we once knew it.

If an existing HC is replaced with an interim on the staff, I believe that would count as "hiring" or "announcing" a new head coach (someone else is now in the position). There is no specification that the new hire can't be an "interim."

Shortening the transfer window from 30 to 15 days seems like the more constraining change.

This is a bandage fix for the problem caused by removing the rule of having to sit out a year when transferring. Both the NIL problem getting as bad as it's gotten and the issue with losing so much of your roster when you fire a coach both stem from that particular rule change.

Some people will argue that the schools having that leverage is unfair. And maybe so. But schools lacking that leverage that's gotten us where we are. Team hopping, chasing money... you could still have NIL in the sport, but a school shouldn't be able to lure away a player with a bag and have them play the same year.

Well, coaches have that exact flexibility. In fact, under current conditions, a coach can leave for greener pastures anytime but if a school wishes to change coaches, they often have to pay a major buy-out clause. If there were less volatility in the coaching ranks, some of this problem would also be reduced.

Why not have a parallel rule that coaches have to sit out a year when they leave for one school while still under contract to another?

The source of the problem is that NCAA does not want to take the inevitable step of recognizing that D1 "student-athletes", particularly in the revenue generating sports, are de facto employees of the University. Currently, they are struggling with a hybrid system of professional amateurism.

Given that that transfer portal has been the saving grace for the LVs, including CKC's first season, I also would not be too strident in defending the antiquated transfer rules.

Fortunately, it just limits the window when an athlete can enter the portal. They don't have to make a decision about leaving/staying within that window.

I think one of the unintended consequences will be that players will enter the portal to keep their options open, but many will end up staying. That will place more chaos on the coaches because they don't really know who intends to leave and who is just keeping options open. Not having another portal in the Spring means that coaches can't replace players who enter the portal but wait until just before classes start somewhere else to leave.
