New to Knoxville .....

I really like your post except the part about Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. not trying to dog you or the good folks that live in those parts, but, IMO,JMO, I think that place is a mess and represents everything bad about E.Tennessee. Unless folks like to sit in traffic and be bombarded by "As Seen on TV" crap, then it's for them. My apologies for being negative towards the area.

Well, I said "drive through"...meaning "don't stop". Although the Applewood Restaurant is a great place for lunch.

And yes, coming in the back way (through Townsend) is both faster and a better view, but I'm thinking don't let them get lost along the way. If we can get them atop Neyland Stadium, and to Cades Cove...we got 'em. Never mind the Chimneys, Newfound Gap, or pick any falls you favor.

Go Vols.

Speaking of which....here I go again....

Few years back. My wife and I are taking one of our twice-a-year trips to the Smokies. We head down to Knoxville; visit my Dad's grave at the Veterans Cemetary; and end up at Neyland Stadium. She had never seen it up close at that point.

We walk around the perimeter, and find our way to the field entrance on the South End. Gate is closed, but there are a couple of stadium workers there. They're very nice, but they tell us that the field is closed to the public. My beloved wife...bless her heart (and she's a UGA fan, mind you) says "Now look here! This man is a diehard, lifelong UT fan...he lives and breathes UT football...and you're gonna tell me he can't even set foot on that damn field?"

You know the rest. They opened the gate...I got to run into the checkerboard end zone...and we stood there for a good two or three minutes and just absorbed what it felt like to stand on that field and look up at that huge vertical stadium, and imagine it filled to the rim with Vol fans beneath a full moon.

God, I love that woman.

Go Vols.

Country star Dierks Bentley will perform a free concert as part of the Lowe's Tailgate pep rally. The event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 on the World's Fair Park lawn. The event will be free, but only 12,000 people will be admitted.

The pep rally will include the Pride of the Southland Pep Band, the University of Tennessee Cheer and Dance Teams, Smokey and "Voice of the Vols" Bob Kesling. Country musician Matt Stillwell will also perform.

Who wants to drive 16 hours to listen to a no talent artist who passes himself off as "country"? What gets jammed down your throat from corporate owned radio stations like WIVK is about as country the f&$#*n man in the moon.

I'm lazy and didn't read the entire thread. So sorry if already suggested, but the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is close to campus. Sounds like she likes the Lady Vols and the place is loaded with women's basketball history. Definitely a must-see for any fan of the game or of the Lady Vols...

Have fun and stay away from DJCrenshaw!

Coming to Knoxville with my daughter (UT freshman 16) to look at campus and see Alabama game.) From Minnesota, she had me paint the Lady Vols logo and endzone on her wall when she was 8. Besides Vol Walk what should we do in 48 hours. We are driving 16 hours and want to make the most of the trip. Already touring campus, we sit in Minnesota on Saturdays and see the tailgating, what are the must see things on game day.

I'm thinking if you have that many hours I would turn the clampitt wagon around and head anywhere just no UT.

Some good info in this thread. A buddy and I are also coming for the game (from Iowa) and this will be our first time to Knoxville as well. I have some questions maybe some of you can help with. It sounds like Calhouns is a good place to tailgate, is this the best non donor lot/place to tailgate? Are there other good non-donor lot options? How much is it to park/tailgate in Calhouns or other non-donor lots? Do lots open at a certain time, or just at sunrise, or how does that work? How early do we need to get there to get a spot? Also wondering what some of the best places to eat in town are? Are there any good sports bars near Calhouns or other non-donor tailgating lots? Looking for a good place for Friday night and we might want to do lunch at a sports bar Saturday so we can watch some of the noon games before heading out to finish tailgating strong. Thanks in advance for any information!

Any of the lots on Cumberland would be good. They generally cost $20-25. Cumberland is where there are tons of bars/restaurants with tons of folks walking around tailgating.

This is prolly the best place for a first timer. You can walk around to see if there are any places you would prefer to hit in the future. Its a 7 oclock kick, so if you get there by 1 you shouldnt have a problem.

Oh yeah, hit the Old City on Friday night.

The Tin Roof on Cumberland Ave is a good sports bar to watch some games on Sat before the Vols game. Also, Calhoun's on the River is a great place , just better get there early. Market Square and The Old City (downtown Knoxville) would be fun to hang out on Friday night. The Downtown Grill and Brewery on Gay Street has good food and microbrew beer. Lots of other good places to eat on Market Square downtown. All within walking distance of the Grill and Brewery as well as The Old City. Enjoy your trip and Go Vols!
