Coming to Knoxville with my daughter (UT freshman 16) to look at campus and see Alabama game.) From Minnesota, she had me paint the Lady Vols logo and endzone on her wall when she was 8. Besides Vol Walk what should we do in 48 hours. We are driving 16 hours and want to make the most of the trip. Already touring campus, we sit in Minnesota on Saturdays and see the tailgating, what are the must see things on game day.

In my younger days, we always tailgated with the crazies on the strip. Now that I'm older, and have children myself, my recommendation is Calhoun's. It is a family atmosphere, you get to experience the Vol Navy, and the trip up to see the Vol Walk before the game is not terrible. There are only two issues with Calhouns. That is generally the opposing team's headquarters, and at the Alabama game, that will be BRUTAL. Also, for the Bama game you will have to get there literally at dawn to get a good spot.

Hope you guys have fun. Go Vols!

Thanks for the heads up. Is there anything for us to do on or near campus before the game.

The Vol Walk and the band marching to the stadium are great on campus activities.

The Vol Walk "begins 2 hours and 15 minutes before kickoff at the Torchbearer statue in Circle Park on Volunteer Drive. It continues down Peyton Manning Pass before turning left on Phillip Fulmer Way and into the stadium through Gate 21A." (you can find maps at utsports.com)

The band marching to the stadium "begins 1 hour and 40 minutes before kickoff. They march up Volunteer Boulevard to Andy Holt Avenue and then onto Phillip Fulmer Way, stopping along the way to "Salute the Hill" before marching into the stadium through Gate 21."

If you want something to do between those 2 activities there is a "Volunteer Village" setup at the Humanities Plaza that has music and food to purchase. It's located at Volunteer Blvd across from Circle Park.

Also, the band's pregame show just before kickoff makes it well worth getting to the stadium a little early.

I would also recommend a trip to Gus's Good Times Deli for a steamed sandwich. It's just off campus on Melrose Place near Lake Avenue (one block south of Cumberland Ave). They raise their prices on gameday so if you are in Knoxville on Friday or Sunday you can get the same food for a little cheaper.

I hope you enjoy your trip. Go Vols!

Country star Dierks Bentley will perform a free concert as part of the Lowe's Tailgate pep rally. The event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 on the World's Fair Park lawn. The event will be free, but only 12,000 people will be admitted.

The pep rally will include the Pride of the Southland Pep Band, the University of Tennessee Cheer and Dance Teams, Smokey and "Voice of the Vols" Bob Kesling. Country musician Matt Stillwell will also perform.

Long Branch Saloon..........class at its best!

Do they still have the cocaine buffet in the bathroom? LOL In college I went there to meet a "friend" with some "parsley" and went to the bathroom before I left and every stall and flat area in the bathroom was being used to cut out lines of cocaine. I got out of there, went back to OCI, and never went there again lol.

Hope you are moving down with your 16 year old freshman daughter.

Maybe he/she means class of 2016/'16 since she's a frosh? Other schools have the habit of always stating the year of expected graduation with the student's name. Alumni do it as well. Or that she will be a freshman in 2016 as she has planned this since she was at least 8 years old?

Those were the good old days. Now, the bathroom at longbranch is used exclusively for buttchugging

Welcome aboard!

First visit to Knoxville. The Bama game will give you a taste of what Neyland is like. Make sure you walk the waterfront from Calhoun's to the stadium.

Set aside half a day for the Smokies. Drive through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge...take the bypass around Gatlinburg...take a right at Sugarlands...and make the half hour drive from there to Cades Cove. Take the loop.

Stop at any point along the way...look across the meadows to the mountains on the opposite side...and try to convince yourself that you are not in God's Country.

Trust me, you are.

Go Vols.

I really like your post except the part about Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. not trying to dog you or the good folks that live in those parts, but, IMO,JMO, I think that place is a mess and represents everything bad about E.Tennessee. Unless folks like to sit in traffic and be bombarded by "As Seen on TV" crap, then it's for them. My apologies for being negative towards the area.

Skip Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, go down 140 (Pellisippi Parkway) through Maryville, Townsend, and do the loop that way. Prob saves an hour of bumper to bumper traffic and unless you are into outlet malls and tourist trap type stuff you will not want to waste a day there.
