New S&C Program

Not sure how they had their S&C program structured previously and what changes they made specifically. I do know that there is a direct correlation between flexibility and injuries. Greater flexibility is associated with lower muscular injury rates. Fatigue plays a big factor in injuries as well, can lead to poor technique, etc. If Butch thought that our guys were being injured at a higher rate than other teams then I applaud him for making changes.

100% agreement:rock:

Here was RTI's update at the start of camp last year. Von Pearson and Williams were both out for non-injury reasons.

Injury/absence update: Jones said the 13 players who missed spring practice should be back this fall, though many will be on a “maintenance plan.” A couple other updates:

• Junior defensive end LaTroy Lewis had his knee scooped and will likely miss 2-3 weeks of camp, though Jones said, “we fully anticipate him being available”
• Senior safety Max Arnold will miss the start of camp
• Freshman defensive end Andrew Butcher (knee) will miss the start of camp
• Sophomore offensive lineman Austin Sanders will be limited at the start of camp
• Senior defensive tackle Trevarris Saulsberry will practice, but will be, “touch and go…nowhere near 100%” according to Jones
• Freshman offensive lineman Zach Stewart will delay his enrollment after the death of his mother this summer

The team seems to be a bit healthier at the start of camp compared to last year.

During camp there were several injuries. Gaulden, Marcus Jackson, and Austin Sanders were all lost for the year. Justin Martin also sprained a knee which set him back a good bit. There were probably some others I'm forgetting or couldn't find in the archives.

I hope we r more explosive this year thsts what they made the change for well one of the reasons. I do hope see more explosiveness to help turn 8 yard play into a 30 yard play

Really good run-down, Triad, thanks for it.

Health of the team significantly better this year, comparing start-of-camp to start-of-camp.

I wonder how we stack up with other teams with numbers and percent of injuries. i.e., Ala., Ga. ect.

Yeah, that's a good question, Savannah. Last year, a few VNers were able to find articles and stat sheets comparing teams' injury rates. But that wasn't until over halfway through fall camp. Might be too early yet to find something similar this year.

IIRC, these are the kinds of sites that provided the info:

NCAA Football Injuries College Football Injury Report Betting Lines, Odds & NCAAF College Free Picks - DonBest.com

You'll notice that, although that site says it was updated this month, it's far from complete--Shy Tuttle isn't on there, for instance, though he is (to date) questionable for our first game. A total of 7 players injured among the 13,000 or so who play FBS football...that would be miraculous. The simple act of living life would make a higher injury rate than that among, say, chess or debate teams. :)

Maybe the guys who keep track of those things will start really providing updates soon.

Not sure of any correlational data but I do know without a doubt that flexibility is key to many preventable injures such as lower back etc etc. Just as a unprovable conclusion due to irrefutable data (yet) I think deductive reasoning would lead to such a conclusion. Just my opinion of course. Oh wait...what???

Whatever we are doing this team looks veteran in it's approach. If that is further confidence from more efficient S&C or just age I don't know. Nice to not have a laundry list of injuries to deal with headed into the fall. Can't wait to watch this team.

Kudos to Butch for his ego swallowing practice of adjusting his coaching staff for the betterment of his players. That's opposed to what many other coaches do, which is to stand by their hires and recruiting choices...never changing things which, obvious to many others, are problematic. Offense not working...hires DeBord. Defense breaking down late in games...hires Bob Stoops. Particular positions not looking all that great (IE: D-line and DB depth), then he brings in supermen. Do any of you doubt CBJ applied likewise due-diligence in bringing in a new S&C coach...the one coach who's with each and every player year-round...to make his players BIGGER-BETTER-FASTER-STRONGER? AMIRIGHT?

Butch Jones seems to be doing all the right things at UT, but many Vol fans now, won't be satisfied until he actually wins big and this, as you know means beating _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Yes you fill in the blank

Very encouraged so far.

Not that I'm one to say I told you so :whistling:.... but several here attacked me for saying that injuries could be lowered by changes in S&C.

Going forward, we really should expect to be in Atlanta every 3-4 years minimum.
