Even with last seasons success; I felt that the amount of injuries we suffered in the spring and fall practice periods was due to a poorly designed S&C program. I was delighted to check in on the teams activities today through their snapchat account (vol_football for those interested) and I saw that one of the coaches had the entire team doing yoga together before they lifted. I think the changes that Butch has made in this area are great for the future and we can already see the results - far fewer injuries at this point than last year. GBO

Great point, Voltage. New S&C program and fewer injuries (thus far, knock on wood) are correlated. Assuming that there's a direct cause & effect there, which we can't verify of course, but it seems a decent assumption.

Good on Mike Szerszen and team!

In interviews both Hurd and Dobbs have specifically mentioned improved flexibility.
Kudos to Butch for his ego swallowing practice of adjusting his coaching staff for the betterment of his players. That's opposed to what many other coaches do, which is to stand by their hires and recruiting choices...never changing things which, obvious to many others, are problematic. Offense not working...hires DeBord. Defense breaking down late in games...hires Bob Stoops. Particular positions not looking all that great (IE: D-line and DB depth), then he brings in supermen. Do any of you doubt CBJ applied likewise due-diligence in bringing in a new S&C coach...the one coach who's with each and every player year-round...to make his players BIGGER-BETTER-FASTER-STRONGER? AMIRIGHT?

Far fewer injuries through 3 practices without pads than last year? Sounds delightful but can you prove your theory?

It's not just fall practices. We actually managed to make it through the summer workouts and into fall with a WAY healthier roster than previous years.

Did we? What injuries did we have this time last year?

Jackson got hurt early. That was big
The test will be Saturday

Yep you are right. It did happen a little later on the calendar than now but still I do agree. Not sure yoga would have prevented it but facts are facts.

Suddenly I'm getting a vision of Jim Carrey in the guano pit with that funky music he's humming.

Not sure how they had their S&C program structured previously and what changes they made specifically. I do know that there is a direct correlation between flexibility and injuries. Greater flexibility is associated with lower muscular injury rates. Fatigue plays a big factor in injuries as well, can lead to poor technique, etc. If Butch thought that our guys were being injured at a higher rate than other teams then I applaud him for making changes.

exactly most of the injuries at this time last year were people recovering from surgeries.. remove that and we are in about the same spot.. But we have only had what 4 days of practice so of course we shouldn't have many injuries.... SMH some folks just jump the shark around here. When we get another week or so in we look at it again but yes I believe the new S&C will pay dividends. I think it will and hope it will but we have to give it time to bear out.

A lot of people will use Kongbo as an example but he is a red herring if there ever was one from JC till he showed up on campus he blew up so it makes sense he would have blown up once he got on campus no matter who the Strength coach is. The real places you see it are other older players that are developing in ways they didn't before.. look at our interior linemen. I noticed they look a lot different than last year and these are juniors and seniors I am talking about thats the sign of a good S&C program. Lets see how Jeff George turns out look at how Dobbs has changed his body.

Yes I like the changes,it's great to get bigger and faster asand stronger but not if players are getting hurt due to it.and myself asand many others posted dislikes of the s&c program last year

I realize we haven't put pads on yet; just pointing out the fact that it seems the new S&C program emphasizes flexibility before strenuous activity

I have to agree with this observation. Let's get two more weeks in to camp before we make too much of a correlation but I think last year's injuries were mainly related to a poor S&C program. Last years injuries were just ridiculous and if I am right most of them occurred in training camp.
