I like the new fake field goal rule. Too easy to abuse the old one.

And I would like to believe that the new ejection rule for coaches was influenced by Muschamp's total meltdown during the Iron Bowl.

I read it a couple of times and I still don't get it. I guess I'll have to see it to understand it.

Surprised they didn't talk about the targeting.
If I understood correctly, during media days, it was mentioned someone new would be overseeing the replays also.
Trying to lower the number of incorrect calls and intent.

Intent as in if the tackler was already headed towards a player, and the player lowers himself causing the helmet-to-helmet etc.

We should be allowed to have 13-16 men on the field in any goal line situation. Dooley would approve.

The way the article worded it was kinda weird. Essentially, teams can't try to pull the trick where the punter is a few yards closer to the LOS so that he has a head start on running the ball AND the punter (or PK on FGs) has to at least give the impression that he's going to kick it. If either of those things doesn't happen, then the team cannot take advantage of the numbering exception, and at least five linemen must be wearing #s 50-79, and they would thus be ineligible receivers.

Butch is like most college HCs. He will raise hell about a call/non-call then let it go. All he is doing is sending a 'you owe me one' message to the refs. HCs like Muschamp and Mark Stoops at UK will not let it go to the point of letting a bad call completely distract them from the game. I saw Stoops get mad about a call in the UT-UK game last season and the guy railed at the side judge for 15 minutes while the game went on. Refs understand HC will get upset about calls; they just expect you to say your piece and get back to the game.

Seems like some of these rules are on the trial and error plan, or a bunch of idiots who never once played a down are gathering around a table and seeing what they can screw up next. JMO.

Well, there goes our fake field goal in the last seconds to win the game in Neyland. :eek:lol: I'll have to rewatch ours from last year to see if we'd squeak by the new rule.

All in all, no real surprises. It does seem that the D continues to get the short end of the stick with many of the new rules from year to year.

The good news is that these sorts of rules changes favor the coaches who run more disciplined defensive programs.

I've talked to an official and the 10 yard rule won't be enforced on field goals when there are 2 people back there (holder and the kicker) or if the kick is made in an obvious kicking situation (30 yard pass gives you 1st down at the 5 with only 10 seconds left. Team takes a time out. Down by 2 with 10 seconds on the clock it's an obvious kicking situation)
