New Name Emerges in AD Search

Yeah he has zero clue. Why don't you catch us up? Iirc, when 247 reported the hire was a done deal last month and that Fulmer was the guy sooner rather than later, it was Hyams who said "no, that's not true, nothing will happen until after the new Chancellor is on board".

So question for you.....did he have a clue there? Was the hire made before she started on Wednesday or has he been proven right?
He has no clue. And that's mostly because there's no consensus among those that do have a clue.

I'm sure he has a source. I do too. I honestly don't think anybody is quite sure where this is going to end up.

One reason that we need a new AD is that we need to ditch Warlick as women's basketball coach like, now. She's is bad and has already been kept on far longer than any sane AD would have. Extending her contract was Hart's worst decision. We cannot have her as coach another year.

I'm not worried about outsiders as much as age. If UT can't make a decision any faster than this, I'd hope they at least get a younger guy. This AD search seem like it has taken longer than Hart actually had the job before announcing his retirement. When you're talking about the "final" chapter of your life, that's a little concerning to me.

I just wonder if they are torn between Fulmer and Blackburn and go with someone outside so they don't have to choose between the two.

Why did the decision need to happen faster than this? There's a guy doing the job. Before he retires, there will be another guy doing the job. I don't get all the hand wringing.

Very little like hiring or long term plans take place under the management of a lame duck leader. As it has turned out, we have some hiring (and firing?) decisions that need long term action right now. Having to wait has not helped with the long term thought process of coaching staffs and the comfort level of potential recruits.
Just the way I have seen this play out in all business and social originations with this situation in my life time.

After the Patterson fiasco down in Austin, I'm not keen on failed pro administrators slumming at the college level. Painting with a broad brush, I know.

i think that's the biggest deal. if Hart's retirement had not been announced 9 months ago..., and say was announced in March, and then later that month we hired Fulmer, Blackburn, Morrison or whoever, the transition would have been viewed as seamless.

they allowed this appearance of ineptitude to fester by making it all public way back when, now they have to produce answers, and speculation runs rampant.

again, it still all goes back to leadership. why/how no one saw any of this coming a year ago, at least as a potential reaction, is beyond me.

the whole thing is just dumb. they've allowed this debate over fulmer and blackburn to grow to a place it had no business getting to, and they could have prevented by simply saying "Dave, we accept your resignation, and congratulate you on your pending retirement, however, we won't announce this until after the Chancellor is in place, and in office, sometime late Feb, early March 2017".

Hear! Hear!
I fear too much 'thinking ahead" for the group at the top. But looking at it, they (cheek and hart) were both leaving so had they quit "thinking ahead" and were just "playing out the string"?

Oh, it's a PR cluster for sure. They needed to hold off on Hart's announcement until about March. I just don't think it matters at this point whether the AD is announced next week or in 2 months.
it wouldn't matter at all if htey announced in 2 weeks Hart's pending resignation....announce in March that he's stepping down in June, and you could announce the new hire in June, and it would still be viewed as seamless transition, job well done.

instead.......we have last 8 months of what looks like complete boneheadedness in regards to anything resembling leadership or leadership related. i mean good grief, don't we have a PR department that could have said "um, hey, we may want to consider........".

it's the actual process of the hire or anything like for me, as much as it is the fact that the powers that be, allowed this circus to get started in the first place.

I absolutely agree accept for "viewed as seamless", we're VN. :)

There would have been "this just doesn't happen that fast" and " there's more to this than we're being told"
Of course followed by rumors of skimming money and being seen around town with a member of the ladies softball team.

We do love some drama, it's just what we do.

If Jones had been fired then there would be a problem. Since it appears no HC's are going to be fired....all though Holly is trying hard...I don't see the big deal either...no like that office seat is empty.

You have a source? Lol. By all means, please, do tell.

And as far as Hyams "having no clue", he's been pretty much spot in thus far.

At least they are keeping my name on the down low. I don't need Phil and the rest of you miscreants excoriating my qualifications and character.

Forget Had. Had is a frog in a blender now. When he announced, the 300 clowns packed in a single Volkswagon showed up, and we need more volunteers to fill the pie pans with whipped cream.

We need a picture illustration. How Bama handled Battle's retirement? Right!

How Tennessee handles Hart retiring? Wrong.

Who gets the job no longer matters. Might as well let Smokey dress up like Bozo.

Ok

I'm more interested in your source now. What's next? Can you confirm who, if anybody is coming to Knoxville for interviews this weekend? What's the hiring timeline? Iirc, you're big on hiring someone from the outside....who does your source like?

I'm not dead set on hiring from the outside. I just think it's a little ridiculous to eliminate candidates based on where they're from. When it comes down to it, all that really does is get us stuck in a rut of only considering people familiar to us.

Agree. Blackburn checks a lot of boxes, that he's a Tn guy is gravy on top, not the meat & potatos

Whole lotta people, including former coaches, former players, boosters and fans believe that being a "TN guy" is a little more important this time around....that it's actually one of the important boxes that needs to be checked. And, in fact, that him being a UT guy is one of the things that makes him such an attractive candidate.
