He wins. It just has to translate over to the next level.
So since you strongly believe that basketball creates more revenue than football does at UT why do you think we aren't dumping much money into this hire? Just curious to hear your dumb logicIf Mike White is hired as the new coach, I will accept it and move on. He was not my first choice, nor was he in my top 7-8 picks.
I have read some fans say that this is an upgrade over Martin> I did not sign the petition and I did not argue that Martin was the "cat's meow" of coaches.
That being said, this new hire is not an upgrade. It is starting the program all over. White is very young, has not been a head coach at this level, and has a lot of work to do on the recruiting trail.
Continuity was lost and UT has gone back to the starting line to get back into the race for basketball dominance. Some may feel good about where we are at. I'm indifferent. I believe we could have made a hire that kept our place in the SEC pecking order and in a position to not lose ground.
This hire was a safe hire by Dave Hart, but it is not coming as cheap as he had hoped to because White has demanded a higher buyout in order to agree to the deal. Hart had the opportunity to cement his legacy at UT with a big fish hire, but chose to go a safer and cheaper route. In the process the program will lose ground for hopefully just a short period of time, while our coach gets his feet wet and is able to prove himself to prospects who know nothing of hi or if he will be successful at UT.
What do you think?
Sounds like he may be more personable energetic and outgoing which is what CCM lacked and one reason the fans never embraced him as much. Who knows about his coaching, has only been a HC for 3 years so verdict is still out, however, pretty solid results in those 3'years. You want find a better person than CCM, however, sometimes nice guys finish last. I bet Mike White will continue to recruit players that are committed to other schools, which is one thing CCM would not do and I really think this hurt his recruiting.
The hoops fanatics will pump up the new hire as the second coming no matter who it is. If it's white, most of us will yawn, make a gratuitous statement or two about how UTK can't get a big name for anydamthing, and go back to ignoring basketball for the next few years.
Was bUTch your choice or your 7th or 8th choice?
Would a 22 yr. old Pat Summit be your choice as the head coach of the Lady Vols?
Would you have wasted a recruiting slot on Dane Bradshaw, who is slow and can't jump and played in a lower level high school conference? Buzz has no idea what he is doing. He is in over his head. This is not Tulsa!!
Would you have wasted a recruiting slot on Lofton? Hell, he was the Kentucky player of the year, but even Kentucky and Louisville didn't want him. He played in a smaller league of competition in Mayfield Kentucky. Buzz has no idea what he is doing. Can't he recruit better than that?
I am glad that we passed on Patric Willis. He is over rated and has played in small town competition. Why waste a scholarship on him, when Fulmer can get Brooks, who is the next Al Wilson....
would you expect a coach at La tech to recruit as well as the head coach at UT?

As a recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss I believe it was reported that he pulled in 3 top 25 classes in a row.
I read this somewhere, can't remember so I maybe wrong.
IMO, I think he can recruit and knows the South and he does know the SEC level. I think he will be looking for a certain thoroughbred of player.
Do I think he could draw that type of player to LA Tech, No, but to UT and the SEC yes absolutely. He will want to go deep to the bench so I will see him a 9 deep type of coach.
It will be interesting to see what how he uses what we got here already and who will depart.
I would have loved to have seen Stokes in this type of environment as a player.
Martin lost some games that he had no business losing. Austin Peay comes to mind. All the close games that we couldn't find a way to win at the end comes to mind.
However; (1) Martin is a respectable man
(2) His players didn't get in trouble on campus " Golden is the exception"
3) He recruited fairly well. He was in on Austin Nichols until the end.
(4) His players graduate.
(5) Martin didn't embarrass the university.
(6) He took the team exactly where we all thought the 2013 teams should end up, which is in the Sweet 16. Yes, he got to the Sweet 16 from the back door, but he still got us there.

well, I don't expect the next coach to miss on 7+ recruits in 3 yrs on one hand. That said, I'd take White everytime of course if we look at next years roster. It has a chance to not be as bad with a coach who knows how to use his players before the direst of circumstance. White will adjust to his athletes and let his kids play ball, which would be a great change.
Didn't Dave Clawson win at Richmond? How did that translate in to our offense in 2008?
Hell, it got Fulmer, Chavis, Brooks, etc. all fired......
Kelvin Sampson wins at Oklahoma & Indiana but I would not want him.
Mike Leach won at Texas Tech, but I would not want him.
