KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Will Muschamp, Texas' defensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting, has turned down a lucrative offer to be Tennessee's new coach, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton continues to work toward having a coach in place by this weekend, and one of the candidates the Vols are zeroing in on now is Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who is a former Tennessee offensive coordinator.

Sources told ESPN.com that Cutcliffe has talked with Tennessee officials, although he's not the only candidate the Vols are considering.

Air Force's Troy Calhoun and Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley are two other coaches on Tennessee's list, while the Vols might also be interested in talking to Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

Tennessee made a hard push for Muschamp and made it clear that money wasn't an issue. But in the end, Muschamp felt like it was best for him to stay at Texas, where he's already contractually in line to replace Mack Brown when Brown retires.

"I'm happy at Texas and plan to be here for a long time," Muschamp said in a statement issued through a school spokesperson Wednesday night.

At the time, Muschamp did not rule out the possibility of leaving Austin for Knoxville, but sources told ESPN.com on Thursday that the Vols had indeed turned their attention away from Muschamp and were focusing on other candidates. Lane Kiffin left Tennessee to take the USC job on Tuesday after only one season in Knoxville.

With the recruiting period going live again on Sunday, the Vols are working feverishly to have a new coach in place by then.

Kippy Brown, in his third different stint at Tennessee, has been named the Vols' interim head coach. Brown on Wednesday said he's been told that he will also be considered for the permanent head coaching job.

Geeze this is disappointing. I'm not thrilled about Cutcliffe. Calhoun....well if Calhoun takes over then I'm renouncing my orange. Who and why is Dooley from LaTech?! What the hell. Why aren't there bigger names than this?! Tennessee is a good job!

Like I have said before, the Tennessee job isnt as appealing as some want to think. It would be a dream job to most of us, but thats because we live and breath UT football. Its a hard place to coach, considering the lack of in-state recruits that dream to come to UT, like Texas, USC, Georgia, and Florida. Nobody wants to put in the work to be successful at Tennesseee.

Didn't Hammy explain the whole misinformation thing last year? And why would we want Muschamp if he'll likely leave for Texas as soon as MB retires? That could be 2 years.
We'll be fine. None of us thought Kiffin would have worked out as well as it did when MH picked him originally. Obviously, although I hate the guy, he was good enough to get the USC job, which next to UF and Texas is prolly the best CFB job there is. I'm sure we'll get another good coach soon. Relax, everyone. Even a bad recruiting class isn't the end of the world. We won't be any worse than we've been the last 2 years, plus we have Bray for the future, and a good QB erases a lot of other problems. We are still Tennessee!

The university must spend the money that the top schools in the Nation spend.. and the next coach to come to UT must make more than the last just so we can give the finger one last time to KITTEN...

here is the fact ladies and gentleman....

CUT ISINT THE SEXYIEST CHOICE..

BUT HE IS THE SMARTEST...

HE IS A COACH AND CAN GET US BACK TO THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS. IF WE HIRE GOOD RECRUITERS AROUND HIM THEM WE ARE SET, AND IM SURE CUT KNOWS RODNEY GARDNER;S TELLIPHONO NUMBER

Kiffin is not a good coach. He was hired because of who he came with, same reason he was hired at USC.

And Tennessee started walk-ons on the O-line and had an undersized guy with blown knees starting on the defensive line.

Yes we are still Tennessee but Vol football is in a horrible predicament right now and it doesn't look to get better any time soon. Recruits that have been waiting to see how the coaching search panned out will see this move as most of us do. It was a strike out and many more recruits will leave which means mediocrity for the next three or four years.....and that's the best we could hope for.

Kenny Powers would never approve of Cut as the choice, just saying.

That's just spin, he isn't the smartest move, he's the only guy that's interested and won't turn us down. He is a fall back option which means at least four or five better coaches have already said hell no.

Its funny how people forget that when we were great, Cut was the OC. When we sucked, he was gone. He came back and made Ainge look great and his offense got us to the SEC Championship. Dont disqualify Cut too bad because of his records at Ole Miss and Duke. No one has been very successful at either school. Even the great Steve Spurrier was mediocre at Duke, before going to Florida.

I hope its not Cutcliffe. I don't want him back. And if they hire Calhoun or LA Tech's coach I will probably throw away my Vol gear and root for someone else in the SEC.

I was very happy to hear that it wont be Fulmer.

C'mon Mike Hamilton!! Get us a great coach!!
