New era .. New U?

Our Wide receiver U was earned over the long haul. No we have not lived up to it for a while, but I think we can earn it back.
We have the QBs necessary to attract receivers. The Oline is looking much better in that we have both better coaching and some really great players coming on. Don't look now but the track program is improving. This brings sprinters and some are receivers.
It's true this offense is oriented to shorter passes but it is adaptable and speed brings YAC.
I think these things along with Beard and Scott recruiting FL will bring great receiving talent. But we need a good season including an SESEC.

Sure. With all those stellar wideouts we have been putting in the league.

Who's the last WR we put in the league, regardless whether he did anything or not? Maybe Denarius Moore in 2011 or so? Is he still in the league?

Clemson has put at least 3 very talented guys (Watkins, Hopkins, Bryant) in the same time period in the NFL, two of which would be considered top 5-10 WRs (Watkins and Hopkins) at some point in their careers. Just put another first rounder in the NFL (Williams).

Miami over the years has put more top college WRs who became top NFL WRs in the league than us. Michael Irvin, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, et al.

Been many, many years since we could legitimately claim the title. And we sure as hell cant do it right now.

Edit- forgot about Hunter and Patterson....kinda helps further the point, although both have "done something", CP primarily as a kick returner.

I guess Cordarrelle Patterson is the last WR we've put in the league to do anything. Sadly, most of his production is on special teams.

If the shoe fits

It is the one consistent thing we can count on having year after year. And some of the statements made? Make a highlight tape. It would sell. Sometimes, being a Vols fan seem like being on Springer...or Jackass.

Exhibit A: "Name a Penn St LB that has done anything from last 5 yrs. But they're still LBU! I realize they got the Sandusky issue but Dooley "sanduskied" our program."

It's not "miserable" to point out that WideReceiverU no longer applies to Tennessee and that other teams are more deserving of the (meaningless) title.

Valid point.

The existence of the "legions of miserables" has never been in doubt.

A few real questions are:

How many exists?

Is there anything that would satisfy them?

Why do they enjoy wallowing in misery?

Does misery love company?

To everyone saying Vols are still WRU: Name a WR the Vols have had drafted over the last 5 years that's done anything in the NFL. I'll wait.

Vols are Punter U now, obviously.

Name a Penn St LB that has done anything from last 5 yrs. But they're still LBU! I realize they got the Sandusky issue but Dooley "sanduskied" our program.

Dooley was just the worst Tn HC ever, Sandusky took bad to a new level.

If Penn State hasn't produced a decent linebacker in many years who has gone on to do well/play at a high level in the NFL, they're no longer LBU....just like we're no longer WRU.

Witch Doctor talking in generalities of the fans that complain even when we win. Witchie has no issue with your statement. Kiffen and Dooley killed the program, Butch is turning the ship

We will always be WRU. There could be a day when there's a WRU 2.0, or The New WRU, but when the question is asked, the answer starts with a "U" and ends with a "T".

No.....where are the rules on this?

When you are the 1st or the Original, it sticks. At worst we could be called former WRU,

Once we get moving again it will be like, "Oh yeah, UT is WRU. Even when they weren't sending WR to the NFL, there were still plenty of UT WRs in the NFL. We haven't sent as many as we normally do, but when was the last time there wasn't a UT WR in the NFL?

Who took the title?

Edit: 5 UT WR are in the NFL or just drafted or something like that.

Double Edit: Or free agent.

Compliments to VolinJC.

Is it in the same rule book as VFL rules? We haven't produced a decent WR into the league in a while, several universities have been machines, such as Clemson.

Penn St sure isn't giving up LBU title.

What is the rule on how many WRs u have to produce in a given time to be WRU? How many yrs do u have the title before they re-evaluate? And who re-evaluates?

Any nickname only applies if someone else calls you that. You don't get to give yourself your nickname. T-bone? No one has ever called Clemson WRU except Clemson. Many called Tennessee WRU during the time.

Kinda thought you had to earn the title, keep producing good WRs in college who got drafted to keep it. Who knew you got to claim the title in perpetuity ?

Just because we have slowed down doesn't change how many we have put in the NFL only how many are there now.

Once we get going again, it will be business as usual.

Who's come close to what we have done?

We're not coming close to living up to WRU. Honest question....do we know how Tennessee got the WRU moniker? Did we call ourselves that, did others? What WRs were "responsible" for the name? Who were the charter members? Truth is, while we've had some very good WRs at Tennessee, and have put a lot of em in the NFL, we've had very few
who have gone on to have outstanding NFL careers. Stanley Morgan (who was a running back at UT) and Alvin Harper are probably the two who had the best NFL careers.

Honestly, off the top of my head, i can think of more running backs and I think we could be better referred to as RBU if we're going to have a "title".
