Before the NIL era, I would have said it was a bad idea but this makes sense. Not recruiting a top 10 QB and picking up someone serviceable. Save the NIL money and spread it around getting better players across the whole field. If he doesn't pan out, pull a portal guy.
Huh? You still have to recruit top ranked player, even at QB. You stop recruiting top guys, you will end up overpaying for a player.

You still recruit top names at QB only if you have immediate need for them. No need to pay 1-2 million to a 5* to sit behind starter for 2 years and then re-negotiate with them (or they transfer) .. that money (2-4 million plus that playing years money) can buy you a proven stud .. seems like top guy every other year or so is an optimal thing
other positions are different since multiple players can get on the field and earn their value

I mean, in football, players get hurt. Players develop at different rates. I really wish they didn't assign stars to kids, because you all act like 5 stars are can't miss and that is certainly not the truth. Even if you have a 5 star under center, you recruit another 5 star.

I said I’d get a high potential 3* QB instead of a 5* QB, you can get them cheap, more likely to stick around and be coached up and wait their turn. Up their NIL at the end of the 2nd year if it looks like they’re gonna be good to go as your starter.

Now other positions I can see grabbing 5* players in certain positions because they can be rotated in out during the system.

This guy has like 0% he will ever make it here
The coaches offered him immediately after he showed out in camp last year. Our coaches clearly believe in the guy...AP said he threw it all over the yard in camp. James Pearce was a 3* kid that our coaches really liked. All that matters is what our staff thinks...star rating means absolutely nothing the day you step foot on campus. This kid probably redshirts next year in 27 to get 2 years between him and Faizon. He has a good a chance as anyone to start here. Joey is a freaking zero star recruit and if he is eligible he will start over 2 young QBs that were both 5* guys in HS at times. I hate when people who have never even laid eyes on a recruit try to write them off. So stupid.

Cam Ward was a 0 star and drafted #1 by the Titans.
Can't get star struck, see what the player is doing in 2-3yrs

Lmao. 2026 is the best recruiting class since the 90s just from the HS guys. Add in the 20+ from the portal and its by far the biggest infusion of talent ever in 1 season at UT. We will struggle a bit this year in 26 with a new defense and QB. 2027 and 2028 are playoff teams though. This is the "golden age" across UT sports. Football, Baseball, Men and Women's basketVol, softball, track and even Rugby where we won another Title.
