New commit: 4-star FL ATH CJ Cotman

Well, remember that door has swung both ways the last three classes. Yes, some kids have backed out on us, but some have obviously been told to look elsewhere.

I don't know this kid personally, do you? If not, why assume he is playing us? He may truly want to be a Vol, but realizes he may be asked to go elsewhere in the end.

He isn't being disloyal. I think he is being smart.

He's being very smart.

I don't understand why so many here are upset with what he said. The incorrect spelling of the word "thank" lets me know that he isn't the sharpest young man on the block. What I do see is a new commit with a skill set very similar to Adoree Jackson. If he is a Vol on signing day, then this is a huge pick up. Welcome to Rocky top CJ. BOOM!!!!!!

Way off base, it's a typo corrected by spell check. Poor form.

Very good possibility. Coaches keep shopping, only makes sense the commitments should too.

Thank God someone gets it!

The young man wants to announce that he's coming, but uses the exact same protocol that our coaching staff does by keeping the the door open for other possibilities and you guys get pissed. Huh?

You want unwavering commitment from our commitments, but wavering commitments from other teams recruits and from our own coaches. Makes perfect sense.

My daughter just signed to play college volleyball. I can assure you that we played it all the way out to make our best choice ... exactly like every one of the recruiting coaches did. I don't blame the young man or the coaches one iota! Hope we land him btw too.

It's the same thing the coaches do. Take commitments and then look to replace the commitment they just took with a better one if they can. Better recruit wants in, someone has got to go. Those who support the coaches doing it can't really complain when the recruit does it.

All that's understood Crunch. It's just that I didn't see the typical tweet from one or two of the assistant coaches that read "We just got better and faster today......but hey recruits, if you're better than this kid don't worry, if you want in we'll drop him like a bag of dirt".

We all understand, either side can renege, walk away from the other party if and when they want. It was just a bit odd to see him spell out so publicly at the same time he was "committing".

I'd imagine some schools see a kid commit to a school like Tennessee and more less back off. They feel they lost him to a better program. All the kid did with the comment was let those schools know he's still open and taking calls.

According to 247 sports he already has an offer from all 3 of these schools.

Its not always that clear cut. UT fans should understand that as much as any school. All offers are not the same. It comes down to is it a committable offer TODAY. Now it may have been at all 3 FL schools as well. As a Vol fan I can't speak on where he was or if he's a take TODAY on those teams boards.

Another thing to consider is UT tends to take mid level guys as kind of a placeholder. Maybe they get to sign and maybe they don't. It's tough to know exactly how UT sees Cotman. They took his commitment. If it were Feb 1st, maybe they would have, and maybe not.

There are only a few scholly spots left so he is locking one of them up while keeping the door open to take another offer. He is working the system and playing the game.

Well, I see this as saying you are better than OSU, NC and O Miss. I don't think Scott miss on many he gets this far. Welcome aboard.

Right now we don't know if we are better than those teams, but there is a lot of talk nationally that we may be. If we have a bad year and go 7-5 this kid probably goes elsewhere. We go 11-1 and he stays here

For all of you that have doubts about his sincerity to be a vol, you need to get on KNS and go to go vols 247. There is a great article on this and he leaves no doubt about how much he wants to be a Vol.

Well.....pow...maybe? Not quite the BOOM yet. Bang? Poof? Idk? I'm confused👍👎?

I like poof.

The young man is doing it right from his perspective. It's the right thing for him to do. It's what's best for him. Obviously he has someone advising him. He has a place now with U.T. but also has leverage for a better offer if it comes along. Also lets him still get the treatment and perks of a still available recruit. This is what you get when you go after 4-5 star recruits. It comes with the territory. If you want hard working, dedicated U.T. guys you recruit 3 stars. That's why Butches teams are mostly 3 star guys with incredibly high 4-5 star ceilings. then he goes after a handful of 4-5 star guys to get guys that can have an immediate impact. I said it before, I don't know how, or who does Butches recruit scouting but whoever it is knows EXACTLY what they re doing.

At this point this is a business transaction for this young man and he is treating it like the art of the deal.

I don't think anybody's legitimately upset here. We're pretty much having some fun with this kid's schizo public commitment and questioning the likelihood that he winds of a Vol. I'm one of them.....and I'm in no way upset.

I like that he's upfront about it. It's better than him randomly flipping at some point. The coaches know now to keep looking as well.

But he said he’s also “still going to take” all five of his official visits leading up to National Signing Day. He said North Carolina, Ohio State and Florida “probably” will get official visits from him.

Not that Cotman expects to change his mind about playing for the Vols.

“I already made up my mind. I’m planning on sticking with it,” he said. “I don’t like decommitting and stuff like that. I ain’t the type to just keep changing my mind and stuff.”

Based on this he sounds pretty solid. Hopefully we keep him, the kid can absolutely FLY!

I completely agree with you. Like I said earlier in this thread, the only diff in this case vs others is he just came out and said it. Coaches and players both keep shopping 90% of the time. Rare for a 4*-5* to shut it down in July. Theyve worked hard and earned it.
Anybody that's followed NCAA football knows how hit and miss it is in crutin. Usually have as many busts as you have players that reach their potential. Butch and Co have been excellent thus far in evaluating high school talent. The amount of players that have been = or been > their respected level of talent have been tremendous! Very few have not lived up to their billing and even those still have time to. Agree and agree dbl d.

We've been fortunate to have a highly touted recruit commit to us early and stay with us for the past three seasons (i.e. Cortez Mcdowell in July...he was actually #178 overall, Preston Williams in September (of his junior year!), Marquill Osborne in September. All of these guys still took official and unofficial visits, and we all remember the roller coaster Kongbo put us on last year. Whether these current commits stick with us or not, when has Butch ever not delivered on signing day? The man and his staff can recruit. Let's just see these commitments as the glass half full shall we?
