Just looked at what Spurrier said about Tennessee, and he is right. In the vols hey day coach fulmer could go into every state with the exception of Florida and get any player he wanted. With Alabama getting Nic, and Georgia getting ric, can't forget uscjr getting Spurrier. All of our borders shut there doors. Including Louisiana,and California a couple of years. I've said this to say our new coach must win memphis at all cost. Especially with the way things are now. That's another reason we need a homerun hire so we can steal some national recruits.

UT has been bad to outright awful in the last 5 years and we've still done pretty well in GA.

Think about it with the state of the program as it is today do we pull Eric Berry or Jamal Lewis. I remember EB stating that he loved the coaches,but he said he thought that Tennessee was going to win the NC. Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry Tennessee had built up alot of steam to pull those players out of there state

Not sure how many Memphis athletes actually have good intentions. The last few in football have not worked out so well. Memphis is a pure crap shoot regarding the players there. I lived there 10 yrs. The city has some bad problems

winning is the key to getting the recruits we need.

If we are competing for a SEC title, they will come. See the 90's for an example.

Recently in Georgia, Tennessee mostly pulls the players that UGA and GAtech don't want with the exception of AJ Johnson and a few other. Hugh Freeze has already started locking down Memphis, so whoever comes in is going to have to exert dominance over TN territory. It was downright embarrassing the 247 article a week or so ago that basically talked about other SEC schools coming in and poaching all the top recruits in TN, and how the talent is only getting better every year.

I agree that's why the only two coaches I think would be Gruden and Strong.

If we bring in a coach who can win with what we've got, recruits will come. We're having such bad luck out of state because we're a bad team right now. If Dooley had won 8-9 games this year, our class would look completely different. A coach that gets results on the field and puts together a good staff will be able to consistently pull top 5-10 classes.

Nope, NOT racist at all. I have seen it all in Memphis regardless of color. That was not my intention and never will be. Memphis is a messed up city regarding the amount of crime these kids see on a daily basis. Just an observation over a long period of time

and this would be the bottom line...you win, recruits will want to be a part of that, in most cases

I don't recall GaTech ever out recruiting UT or losing a player to Gatech. UGA is a yearly thing as UT goes head to head with them. IMO, the next staff needs to lock down the state of TN. I think this is the most important thing in regards to recruiting. Also, I do think Georgia is vital and outside of locking down TN, GA is the most important recruiting grounds for UT

The talent in this state is not that bad at all. The problem is why can't we get the best talent in our state. Jalen Ramsey, Corn Elder, and ill include Vonn Bell I can name so much more. Also, the best running back I have seen play Jalen Hurd whos only a junior in high school isn't really considering tennessee. It should be a sin for tennessee not to get these kids. Tennessee should also be able to grap the best kids from North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia. Also, if you sprinkle in Georiga which tennessee has been pretty good at getting decent talent out of.

That's a bunch of crap. Memphis is one of the most screwed up cities in America. It runs close behind New Orleans and Detroit. Racial undertones have destroyed that city. And, politically correct it may not be, most of the racism comes from the black community. I'm not discounting the city's history, but since the day MLK Jr. was killed that city has been embroiled in racial tension.

Holy Christ (to quote a dooley term) the city school system gave up their own charter after 20 years of corruption and mismanagement.

If you want to come on here and talk football fine. But don't start defining cities you know nothing about. I was born and raised in Memphis. Calling someone a liar because he speaks the truth about a cesspool like Memphis is ridiculous.

I agree - and disagree to a point. Lived in Memphis for 2 years, admittedly I was fortunate. Company bought a house on Mud Island for my residence, but my work entailed being in some of the worst parts of the city. Not going to lie, I enjoyed every minute of it. But you are correct in saying Memphis is a rough city, not quite 3rd world, but I did consider it second world. I'm not racist by any means, but one could tell the tension. It took a while to gain the employee's trust (I'm an old white guy), but once the trust was gained, I learned a lot about the city from some of it's best citizens, mostly black. If the opportunity arises, I would go back.

I am sorry about the title. I was trying to say the new coach must win the whole state of tennessee including (memphis) got a new android phone hard to text.

Here is the thing. I know memphis is rough. I grew up there. But Tennessee presence must be felt threw the whole state especially Memphis. I wish I was over marketing for Tennessee. We have to promote state pride to win these in state recruiting battles

I was born and raised in Memphis, and I'll agree it's important to get talent from that end of the state but I really think what's hurting Tennessee most of all is that since the end of the Fulmer era until now people have always said we must lock down our own state, and all the while our national profile and brand has slipped to the point where few of those Rivals Top 100 kids even consider Tennessee. We maybe get one or two but in the end we have to settle on talent. A high school kid in California or New Jersey knows Alabama--they know LSU and to a lesser extent some of the other schools in the SEC--Tennessee has become kind of an afterthought and that has to change. There are some other factors that have contributed to our decline but really it only leaves us with one option: hiring a superstar coach that can resell our brand and get people excited. We've had to rely on hype (Kiffin) and inexperienced buffoonery (Dooley)--that's why you see and sense all this "we have to hit a homerun with this hire" attitude. Irrelevancy is a death knell for a football program. I'll point to Penn State as an example--great story this year but all those penalties are going to make it very hard for them to be a relevant football program in the future. It might take a decade for them to come back.

By no meens am I a PSU fan but I will give them respect in one way. It will not be a 10 year sentence they serve. Many speak of "Football Factories" in the South, but I give you PSU in 5 years, will be right back to their rightful place as #1-3 in the BIG 10-15 ... or however many schools join the conferance.
PSU is one of the founding members of the "Football Factory", just look at what they will do to be relevant.
