Talked to an @SEC assistant today about the new balls in #CollegeBaseball. The good news? “Hitters are loving it. It’s a major difference.”

Thought this was interesting.

They may be similar to "Pearl" baseballs that are used in batting cages.

I love low-scoring games that are well pitched and well defended.

HOWEVER,

the scoring has been crippled too much and I think the NCAA and experts found a good place to make an adjustment.

I'm sure the scouts will also appreciate the more apples-to-apples comparisons between pitchers now. I had a pitcher tell me the ""old" balls with the thincker seams was more like throwing a wiffle ball.

So, now we'll see straighter pitches and more hits. I'm not sure the slimmer seams will necessarily result in greater distance themsevles, just mroe hits and more opportunities to have home runs.

In general, I am opposed to almost any rule that increases homeruns. I find a game filled with homeruns to be quite boring.

NCAA Concludes Study On Ball Seams

NCAA Concludes Study On Ball Seams - BaseballAmerica.com

.....The lab tested how far balls traveled from a machine at 95 mph with a spin rate of 1400 RPM and a launch angle of 25 degrees (replicating the settings of a typical home run). The research shows that the drag effect is real, and the longer a ball travels, the greater the drag effect. The raised-seam ball traveled an average of 367 feet, while the flat-seam ball traveled an average of 387 feet. That is a significant difference, and the difference between the two balls increases the harder a ball is hit........
