New assistants possibility with new OC

I am curious if others think there will be more changes to assistants with a new OC coming on board. I think it is a good excuse to change out if you can really upgrade and you were not truly happy with the performance or fit.

One of the radio guys said yesterday that assistants was a potential hold up on the deal. UT is not willing to part ways with any current assistants unless the leave on their own. All of the current coaches signed 3 year deals and would be owed buy out money if fired without cause.

WR Coach Johnson: Safe
RB Coach Weinke: Did alright but may move to QBs Coach
OL Coach Friend: possible but I doubt it. I'm sure they will review everything but my guess is the crew had too many injuries and is still one season of S&C away from being at least average.

I don’t know how the heck u can tell who was doing good and who sucked with some of the players we had starting... OL being the prime example.
Qb coach “ look JG u are gonna have .82 seconds to recognize three blitzing players and gtfo or chunk the ball. Be ready to do it after .5 seconds. “
Receivers coach “ok you got to be open in .3 seconds on the post route or we are gonna throw screen passes the rest of the game.”
Rb coach “ you find a damn hole and hit it I don’t care where it’s supposed to be”
OL coach 😤 “why do I even come to work”
To summarize a couple of examples I don’t think the friend is teaching players take numerous false starts cause u don’t remember the damn snap count. I had pop warner kids that could do it.
I don’t think the secondary guys are taught to let guys get over the top when u have cover 1 or 0 and no help... they are just slow. That’s why teams can throw under neath so much cause our corners are having to line up 10 yards back and when they do line up on the los they get burned cause they don’t chunk the guy inside 5.
Until we have a better caliber of player I don’t think most of the coaches can railroaded for the lack of competitiveness this year.

Freeze is probably more concerned with what terminology the current coaches use and how do they teach technique. In the end I would think Freeze is interviewing us as much as we are interviewing him. Without the right support staff he would be set up for failure from day one.

Agreed and I wouldn’t want to be coordinator or Hc where the bosses were telling u to make do with what we have under contract. Maybe a couple of vfls for recruiting purposes but not a whole staff. My point is unless he has coached with a guy and knows he’s an idiot I don’t know how u tell a guy to bug off. Will friend again being my example... s&c is one factor of our ol being bad along with sizes and I just can’t imagine he’s that bad of a coach as much as he didn’t have a lot to work with. I would expect any oc coming in to have a few guys he wants to bring and if I were jp and Phil I would give them half of what they asked for and tell them we can make wholesale changes in dec 2019 if ur not happy.

I agree it is not the current coaches fault that Helton left so they shouldn’t be fired for something that is out of their control. I would tell him the same lets take a wait and see approach, you coach with these guys one season and we will make changes after next year.

The million dollar question is will Freeze accept those terms?

Who is the freeze guy u reference ? I seem to recall seeing his name posted in a thread somewhat recently 🤔

Bad idea! Imagine if Freeze leaves in a year or so and takes them with him
Then we need to hire complete new offensive staff at that point
