New AJC article on recruting...

I agree with what your saying here but what can the NCAA or the SEC do that would have a real effect? reprimands and public "punishments" have proven to have little if no effect at all on Kiffin or recruiting. I dont really think the NCAA can do anything short of taking scholarships or probation that would really slow Kiffin down. And I dont think they'll find enough of anything for that.

Why wouldn't they take a few scholarships? Or hit Kiffin up with some recruiting restrictions? You've got hostesses who haven't been educated enough on the rules; you've got Kiffin's somewhat damning quote about the intern, saying that he didn't do any recruiting "that I know of" (shouldn't he know?). And that's what we know right now. Throw in a couple more ticky-tack things that they come up with, and then you issue a statement saying that Tennessee is showing a dangerous disregard for the rules, that there's a disturbing pattern of behavior ever since the new staff came in, and take away a couple of scholarships for cumulative secondary violations. That's about the way I expect it to play out. Or for them to declare one our recruits ineligible to play for us. Or something. It won't be major, but it'll be enough to have a whole Sportscenter cycle about how Kiffin has finally been punished, etc.

This is assuming that they can't come up with anything major, in which case Katie bar the door.

This whole thing is no big deal and will blow over soon, once the bowl games start. These georgia homers at the AJC are laying it on good.

If they're going to go after us for accumulating secondary violations, they'll have to punish almost every school in the nation.

Fair and balanced isn't the way the NCAA works. They're a bunch of moronic, pencil pushing geeks but they will find at least a few secondary violations. Apparently they can't find a lot because the review hasn't escalated to an inquiry or investigation despite the media's misrepresentation. Apparently the NCAA isn't getting the job done for whoever is pulling the strings so now the conference is looking into Rubio as well. We're already getting screwed with the timing and the negative publicity this is getting but I think the powers that be are still going to find a way to stick it to Kiffin.

The NCAA has as of this very moment not issued any of the requirements indicating the University of Tennessee is under investigation of anything, secondary violation or anything else. Everything printed is just pure ol' speculation.

Question-If my wife and I were to donate $50 to the Alabama athletic department and become a booster (that was hard to type) and go to a high school football game with a sign that says COME TO ALABAMA and have our picture taken with the worst football player on the field, would Alabammer get in trouble? Why or Why not? Just asking.

If so, sign me up! I'll recruit for the Hogs all year and for the Bammers during holidays.

If UTK was indeed forwarded information that the hostesses went to South Carolina, and they didn't self-report the violation, then yeah, you're getting into "institutional control" issues at that point. The girls' trip is probably nothing serious. The recruiting intern thing is probably nothing at all. But failing to report a secondary violation when your program is under the scrutiny that ours is under right now? That's something. It's hard to see why that would fall on the coaches rather than the compliance office, but ultimately it doesn't matter.

The NCAA is not going to walk away from this empty-handed, not after all this press. Kiffin isn't going to be allowed to gloat about being found completely clean. Going back to the health inspector analogy I used -- if you own a restaurant and you piss off somebody on the city council, a team of health inspectors is going to show up. Maybe they won't be able to find enough to shut you down, but they're going to find enough to make you squirm for awhile and have to post that nice big "82" up next to the cash register to embarrass you.

well done sir, couldint have said it better myself. somthing is going to come of this. I love Kiffin but its his job to know these things like bringing that intern or whatever. its his job to know. if he does somthing that gets our bowls taken away etc this marrige is going to be over pretty quick

"institutional control" is a catch-all. It's crap, like "wreckless driving" for accelerating to fast so they can search your car and still give you a ticket when they find nothing. Control technique for a control freak (I'm lookin at you slive).

If selling textbooks multiple times isn't lack of institutional control, we have nothing to worry about.
The Institution should be able to control how many textbooks an athlete receives, not what two girls decide to do with their free time.

It would have to be something far, far beyond what's been publicly alleged for UT to have postseason play taken away. It's hard to believe that Kiffin would be that stupid, given how enthusiastically he's annoyed so many people in the last year -- it would be the equivalent of passing a cop car on the right going 95 MPH with a bag of ganja in your trunk. Kiffin's whole career is tied up in this job; if he gets fired in disgrace, he's screwed. SURELY he hasn't done anything incredibly stupid.

This is the kind of editorial I'd expect that the AJC's C-team would write about a supposedly dead in the water program that beats the Bulldawgs by 26 and has obtained commitments from several of GA's top rated prospects. They're just preaching to the choir down there.

The part about Reaves, is what concerns me the most. (Assuming, that is true)

That would tie the staff to the situation. Which would be a problem.
