Just closed a deal on a 2 1/2 ton Trane central heat and air unit. It's rated at a 14 seer. Whole unit + instillation is gonna cost me $3,500. Anyone have any knowledge or experience with purchasing one? I got prices with 4 different companies and this one seemed to be the most bang for the buck. Also has 10 years parts and 1 year labor warranty.

What's the square footage of your house? One story or two?

1 story, 1500 sqf. From my research the baseline for tonnage is 1 ton per every 500 sqf.

Yeah, according to charts, you're at the limit. Did you price a 3 ton to see the difference money-wise? Just need to make sure you're covered so the a/c doesn't run 24/7 in the hot summers.

My old unit was a 10 seer. This new one is 14. I should expect a pretty good decrease in my electric bill. Should pay itself off in about 2 years.

Here's the real killer...my good friend replaces them frequently. They charge about 2k labor and 3 guys do it in a half day. Absolute robbery. They are cheap (relatively) and make what a lot of folks make in a week in a half day. Thieves...likely that the unit is about half of that price.sometimes less

TEX, did you get the unit replaced? I need to upgrade a new AC in the next couple years. Damn things are pricey.

let me know how it runs compared to your other model. How old was your other unit and why did you get it replaced?

I have an extremely old and inefficient York. Want to upgrade to something more efficient in the next couple years but I have to get my roof replaced first.

It runs way better than the last one. Seemed the old one (prolly around 13-14 yrs old, 10 SEER) was always running to keep it cool. The new one doesn't run near as much. Quieter too! Has a cool lighted touch pad thermostat, you can set it to come on/off at different temps during the day.
