Neverending MBRO memory thread

2021 is predicted to be a big year for the 17-year cicadas. These aren’t the big green things familiar across the Southeast each summer. These are the red-eyed, black-bodied, orange-winged, 100-decibel bugs that come out of the ground in 17-year cycles for a mating frenzy to rival any other in nature. Imagine half a billion males emitting 100-decibel mating calls. Hello tinnitus (kidding; I already have this at turbine engine whine levels). The multi-state area includes Georgia, Joe. I expect North Georgia to have a notable concentration. Might have to pay you a visit to hear their song.

I lived in Knoxville last round. Tree bark was destroyed where they came out. Dogs howled endlessly - the cicadas sounded like burglar alarms. They’d fall out of trees into your hair, and their bodies were crunchy underfoot. Cats enjoyed hunting them, though. Ugh, I’m with you. And I have endless tinnitus too.

In the past 17 years, too much of my county has been denuded of forests (Developers' credo has been to scrape the earth bare, develop, build, and plant a few Bradford pears). I'm wondering if any will errupt in my neck of the woods. If they don't, Cicada tourism seems a preferable alternative.
