NEVER schedule GA Tech

TN vs Tech

They cut no more than a zone team.

Go on Youtube and checkout some of their games. Their whole blocking scheme is cut blocks. Every single block they launch themselves into the legs of the defender, even at the 2nd level. During their bowl game against Kentucky, they took out 2 defensive player sand Stoops got into with Johnson over it. It's dangerous for players and should be against the rules.

Paul Johnson is such a dick. I have never liked the guy.

Actually, I think the name of the game against triple option teams is this: get ahead by 2 scores early, then just have fun playing ball the rest of the game.

Once a wishbone team is two scores down, a sense of feverish desperation settles in on the far sideline. With good reason: it's a ball control scheme, not a scoring scheme. Once they've lost control, there's not much left they can do.
Let's do this

They shouldn't have scheduled Tech.

I hope Tennessee wins, but nothing they learn from that game will help them in the future games...

Exactly right. The defense will be so depleted by the end of the first possession, the Tennessee offense and special teams will be suffering severe PTSD and will refuse to take the field.

If Butch had any smarts he'd pull the team from the field after the coin flip, put them on the bus and get the hell out of there. Also being sure to take I-20 instead of the connector so as not to drive by the GA tech campus on the way out of town.

Who is worse.....play GT or playing Alabama with Hurts, a NFL RB and an NFL OL?

Let's do a risk/reward scenario. We're gonna play bama every year, every single year. There is no reward for beating Georgia tech outside of possibly slight regional recruiting advantage. Bama is difficult for any team to beat, much less a team that is playing less than one hundred percent. Im not saying Tennessee can't win versus GT, I'm just saying there's not a whole lot of "WIN" in a win vs Georgia Tech and there's a whole lot of potential for a loss even if it's not a loss on paper but a loss of a player for an sec game, etc. JMHO.

You do not face the triple in the sec. You most likely will never face it in a playoff ( the ACC and GA will take care of tech because they face it every year and know exactly how to contain/stop them ). If the athletic department scheduled this game while Paul Johnson was coach at tech, it may be regretting that decision in the near future. There is a difference between knowing what to do and still having to think about it to be sure, and knowing to the point that it comes natural and you can play fast. Those acc teams and ga have faced it enough that they know and play fast. We haven't.

This game in my mind is 50/50 for both teams, UT and CBJ with the most to lose. If we still had dobbs, I would be a UT lean, 60/40. We are gonna need plenty of offense to keep up with tech. Dobbs leading this offense would have given me the confidence that we wouldn't shoot ourselves in the foot, and put at least 35 on the board. We are gonna need 35 points to win this game imo. Idk if we can count on that with Dobbs gone.

Folks, if we escape with the W, be happy. Be very very Happy. I don't care if it takes a miracle catch or tech giving us the ball 6 times for no good reason for us to get the W. I'll take it any way I can get it against this offense and this team.

Step away from the ledge. Check out their all time record vs Vandy and our all time record against Vandy. You'll feel better. Tried of knee knocking weaklings, hell the yellow jackets need to be scared of us.

We haven't lost to Vandy since 1941. You haven't lost to Vandy since November.

lol a whopping 12 times and one was a tie. Your record against vandy is 20w-15l.

Speaking of which, when was a team like vandy ever a good measuring stick for how well a team performs?

That's the spirit!

I've noticed the more trash a team talks the more they are worried about the game.

I'm sure y'all will compete in the ACC, but never should have tuck tail and run if you want respect.

Wasn't it Vandy that ran y'all out of the SEC?

On paper, the two programs are pretty closely matched:

2016 Record:
-- Ga Tech: 9-4 (4-4 in conference)
-- Tennessee: 9-4 (4-4 in conference)

2016 Scoreboard:
-- Ga Tech: scored 367 pts, allowed 318 pts
-- Tennessee: scored 473 pts, allowed 375 pts

2016 Ranked Opponents (AP):
-- Ga Tech: 1-2 (beat Va Tech; lost to Clemson, Miami)
-- Tennessee: 2-1 (beat Florida, Va Tech; lost to Bama)

Common opponents in 2016, Ga Tech went 4-0, Volunteers went 3-1:
-- Virginia Tech (lost to Tennessee, 45-24, lost to Ga Tech, 30-20)
-- Georgia (lost to Tennessee, 34-31, lost to Ga Tech, 28-27)
-- Kentucky (lost to Tennessee, 49-36, lost to Ga Tech, 33-18)
-- Vandy (beat Tennessee, 45-34, lost to Ga Tech, 38-7)

Three Toughest 2016 Opponents:
-- Ga Tech 1-2: #1 Clemson (L), #16 Va Tech (W), #20 Miami (L)
-- Tennessee 2-1: #2 Alabama (L), #14 Florida (W), #16 Va Tech (W)

Two Worst 2016 Losses:
-- Ga Tech: North Carolina, Pitt
-- Tennessee: South Carolina, Vandy

...

So yeah, on paper it's a tight match-up for a season-opening non-conference P5 versus P5 game. Should be fun. #WGWTFA.

Great data. Thanks for putting this together.

I'm gonna go throw up now after having to read some of that.......

To everyone who voted we lose, will you give credit to coach jones if he wins this for beating a better football team?

Or will you explain away his triumph?

FYI, it's rhetorical. I know the answer.

Can someone define what a legal cut block is and at what point does it become illegal? I know the chop block part of it.

This is a gross oversimplification, but only OL and stationary backs behind the OL within the tackle box are allowed to cut block, and the block must be made between the 10 and 2 position facing the opponent. IOW, no cut blocking from the side. There is other verbage regarding whether the ball has past the line of scrimmage, but that is the basic gist of it.

If we win, we'll be gently informed how insignificant the win is and how terrible Georgia Tech is as a program. If we lose, there will be a million threads pointing out how the loss proves Butch needs to be fired immediately...because Georgia Tech is a terrible program. :) Sorry GT fans, your fate is sealed either way. :hi:
