In 2009, Tennessee’s new head coach Lane Kiffin came to Knoxville spitting piss and vinegar. He brought with him Monte Kiffin, Jim Chaney, Ed Orgeron, Frank Wilson and Lance Thompson who were considered some of the best coaches in college football.
Alabama was fielding a highly talented, veteran team picked to finish in the top 10. Tennessee’s roster wasn’t the most talented bunch, but they played with heart, confidence and exceptional effort. The VOLS started a senior QB who hadn’t shown much during his career, an offensive line that started two undersized, walk-on brothers, and a middle linebacker who was 5-9 190 lbs.
This Tennessee team stood toe to toe with Alabama for the entire game, only to have the potential winning field goal blocked by the Crimson Tide in the final seconds. The VOLS lost that day 12-10. Alabama went on to win the National Championship that year.
I hope our Coaching staff, fans and players remember this....... Never say Never. GO VOLS!
After further review: The game film shows that the Alabama defensive tackle ran over the Tennessee center on the last play of the game. According to the NCAA Rule book, that is a penalty. Immediately after the final second ticked off..the referees that day were already running for the tunnel....
