In 2009, Tennessee’s new head coach Lane Kiffin came to Knoxville spitting piss and vinegar. He brought with him Monte Kiffin, Jim Chaney, Ed Orgeron, Frank Wilson and Lance Thompson who were considered some of the best coaches in college football.
Alabama was fielding a highly talented, veteran team picked to finish in the top 10. Tennessee’s roster wasn’t the most talented bunch, but they played with heart, confidence and exceptional effort. The VOLS started a senior QB who hadn’t shown much during his career, an offensive line that started two undersized, walk-on brothers, and a middle linebacker who was 5-9 195 lbs.

This Tennessee team stood toe to toe with Alabama for the entire game, only to have the potential winning field goal blocked by the Crimson Tide in the final seconds. The VOLS lost that day 12-10. Alabama went on to win the National Championship that year.

I hope our Coaching staff, fans and players remember....... Never say Never!

GO VOLS!

After further review: The game film shows that the Alabama defensive tackle ran over the Tennessee center on the field goal attempt. According to the NCAA Rule book, that is a penalty. Immediately after the final second ticked off..the referees that day were already running for the tunnel....

Delusion at it's finest. This Bama team would beat the 2009 Bama team by 4 TD's and maybe more. The game has changed in 10 years as Saban no longer has Bama as a smashmouth run you over program. Back then Greg McElroy was the QB and they had one very good WR and one good RB. Now they have a arguably the top QB and 4 WR's in the college game all starting on the same team.

We have no shot and it's really not even close. Back then, Bama had one breakaway threat. Now they have 6 skill position players on the field every play who can take it 80yds for a TD without being caught.

It is what is.

He also took his helmet off as soon as he blocked the kick in celebration. That should have also resulted in a flag and an un-timed down.

It is hard to predict the number of draft eligible players with this 2019 UT team that will end up signing in one of the seven rounds of the NFL draft but IIRC, the 2009 VOLS had the following drafted:

Montario Hardesty
Denarius Moore
Jonathan Crompton
Eric Berry (1st round)
Dan Williams (1st round)
Jacques Mcclendon
Chris Scott
Luke Stocker

Not to mention, Kiffin also had a better collection of solid collegiate players like Dennis Rogan, Wes Brown, Chris Walker, Rico McCoy, Gerald Jones etc. The current 2019 team is not as talented as the 2009 VOLS IMO.

We weren’t that far removed from an SECCG appearance either. There were plenty of guys on the 09 squad that still knew how to win. Saban was in year 3 and really just getting started. The talent gap in 09 wasn’t nearly as big as some think. In fact, it’s no longer a gap between the two programs... it’s a chasm.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed but it’s going to take a lot of breaks going our way.

Unfortunately, as much as a talent gap as there was 10 years ago, there is even more so now. Bama has only gotten better, and our 09 team would have no problems with this year's team talent wise. Would love our guys to come out and play with guts and fire, but that may be our ceiling. Anyone expecting even a moral victory via the scoreboard is in for a tough Saturday.

We fought our asses off to get to this point
The blood, the sweat, and the tears you put out in the spring and summer when you thought you didn’t have anything left. You pushed through! When you go there you leave it all out on that field. Impose your will on them. Make them play your game. If your hurt you better crawl off if your injured your brothers will carry you off. Look to your left and rignt these men got your back are you ready to fight when they fight! Bleed when they bleed! Kick, scratch, and claw for every inch, every yard, every point! Take what is yours! Tonight we take back what is ours!

No lets go kick their ass!

It's a never here because of their style of offense. Cant keep up.

The unlikely upset is more realistic if you're playing a defensive minded, lower scoring team. In that case a few turnovers can turn the game.

Not in this situation.

I am not so sure about that. Go back and look at the amount of talent bama had on defense alone and get back to me. Also, Trent Richardson & Mark Ingram were in the same backfield.

Terence cody took his helmet off immediately after the block which was a penalty and was ignored. At worst it should have been a re kick.

Wouldn't have mattered if they'd thrown the flag. Penalty still would have resulted in Bama's ball and the end of the game.
