Never Check Neyland Again

"Gimmick"? You can call it whatever you want and stick a label on it, but checkering Neyland is a sign of fan base strength, win or lose. I distinctly remember a tweet from an analyst that said the Vol faithful deserved better, showing the stadium checkered and describing how loud the crowd was. Blaming the checkering of the stadium is a deep denial that we've just simply lost the big games. And another thing, it's not putting anyone on a pedestal. There was no denying that was a huge game for us. Everyone knew it. It could have set a strong precedent for when we started SEC play. I know some of you are angry. I'm disappointed myself. But the season is still salvageable. It was an OOC game, and I like the way we match up with Mizzouri, Florida, and everybody else in the east. On that note, everybody have a great rest of the day.

OP, c'mon man. You really don't believe that checkering the stadium had anything to do with the loss do you? If so, I won't be able to take your posts seriously anymore. That's delusional.

Don't know if you were there, but team 119 is WAY better than team 118 and it is evident in every single aspect of the game. The loss hurts because we are so close to tipping the scale in our favor and because yes, we should have won with that lead. But the season is far from over and this team WILL be successful. The people b****ing and complaining about us playing a great football game should stop watching football.

Until we can actually put together a worthy performance, we need to stop building bigger stages to fall off.

That means no checker Neyland, no grey uniforms, no silly chants, no Jumbotron messages from rappers. Let's put on some damn orange and win some damn games like we used to. Then we can worry about hyping up a few games.

I don't see why you don't checker Neyland every game. It looks so much better than when other teams stripe theirs. It could just become a part of your game day like Vol navy, running through the 'T', and Rocky Top. JMO

This article is pretty cool. Expresses OK's centers reaction and impression of Neyland stadium... Bold'd for emphasis...

NORMAN — Oklahoma center Ty Darlington walked onto the Neyland Stadium field Saturday for pregame warm-ups and looked around, seemingly soaking in the electric atmosphere.

“I knew it was gonna be unique going into it, and then getting out there, the checkerboard, the stands, the end zone, they were playing ’Rocky Top,’ you just can’t help but feel from the very get go, ’This is why I’ve wanted to play college football my entire life,’” Darlington said.

“That’s a moment I wanted to remember.”

Once the game started, Darlington said he had “a great time,” even while OU was losing and struggling to move the ball offensively through three quarters.

The loudness of the stadium, though, became problematic for the Sooner offense. At one point during the second quarter — with Tennessee leading 17-0 — the Neyland Stadium public address announcer said Volunteer fans had set a stadium record with 114 decibel reading. Live rock bands can reach as high as 115 decibels.

The Sooners were called for some false start penalties, and had trouble hearing quarterback Baker Mayfield call out the cadence before plays.

“Our cadence is something we thought would work in loud environments,” Darlington said. “We went out there and we could not hear. The first play, I’m waiting for it. I’m like, ’Where is it?’ It was so loud. I could be screaming at you from this far away and you wouldn’t hear what I was saying.”

Darlington said the Sooners had to stop using words to call out plays and the cadence because it was so loud.

“It was all pointing and signaling and just sort of like reading lips and stuff,” he said. “There were a couple times I guessed on what Baker said. … It’s very dangerous, but I mean the play clock’s low and I’m hoping he said what I think he said.”

I get too wrap into these games. If it had been a back and forth game, then I would be ready for any outcome. But the fact we had a 17 point lead, I felt for sure we would win. That is why it was so disappointing. I was depressed for 2 days. I think I will pass on the Florida game...just catch the highlights (Lowlights???) on ESPN. That way I won't have my hopes up for 3 hours only to have them crushed in the last 40 seconds of the game. Well BYEEEE.
