Really enjoying Death By Lightning. Just four episodes which is refreshing.

I started it last night and did 2.5. I'd been meaning to get after this one. Incredible cast. Offerman is so good. I was almost crying laughing at his delivery of

"....she passed away last January or so."

Death by lightning is interesting but the language throws me off. Not really set for a time piece series. They talk like modern times. Watchable but all the f bombs are a bit cringe

Maybe I’m not remembering it exactly right, but weren’t most of the F bombs from the New York Senator? I found it surprising also as I wouldn’t have expected that to be part of the educated’s vocabulary in that era?

well I just read a memoir by the creator and writer of Deadwood. I'm here to tell you the dialogue was heavily researched and spot on. Guess the prissy boys lived further east.
I get it but even if it is accurate I'm not used to hearing them speak like that in those times so I would enjoy it more without it.

Interesting though, I guess I never really thought about it. I like the old western movies and just assumed they didn't use the F bomb and other more "colorful" fowl words and phrases because they just didn't talk like that and not because the movie was rated PG.

I'll take accuracy over offense 10 out of 10 times.
Yeah I didn't find any of offensive, I just didn't think they used the F bomb back then. I mean all hell breaks loose when Trump says it in 2025.

But Im obviously not as well read as you are so when I watch movies for entertainment I really dont care how accurate they are when it comes to using fowl language.

Bawk you!

I'm guessing you haven't watched Deadwood.

I don't think the specific swear words being used in Deadwood were of the time. Of course there were vulgar people, but the actual swear words they used don't sound like swear words to us.

Ipso facto, using our swear words isn't historically accurate but it captures the spirit of their swearing.

Haha, I posed this question to GPT:

HBO's Deadwood shows them swearing using very vulgar terms we use today. Is the vocabulary accurate to the time? what kind of swear words did they actually say?

It's confirming what I said. "Go to hell" was worse than anything you could say sexually. Anything blasphemous at all was really bad. Character attacks were extremely offensive, too. Animal comparisons were really bad. Ethnic slurs.

Ill take David Milch and his research over AI. Thanks.

AI didn't make this up. I heard this a decade ago.

Did David Milch say he researched it and this was accurate, or you'rejust guessing? I think that he did research it and landed on "I want it to sound accurate and work more than I want it to be accurate and not work."

If you make a movie about ancient Rome, you can make it accurate by making all the buildings colorful but it would take the audience out of it because we think they were all white.
