Netflix

I wouldn't say it's a determining factor but if it's something I'm on the fence about and I see 4+ stars I'm more likely to give it a try than not. The opposite is true for less than 2 stars. Now if someone I trust recommend it then the stars play no part.

Tried Glow. First couple episodes hooked me. I like Mark Maron a good bit and the odd ball characters were intriguing. Got up to Ep 6 and it slowed way down. I'll probably try to finish the season but not sure I would come back for a second season.

I agree with huff about looking into ratings. I actually had an argument with a few of my friends about this. There are a lot of movies and periodically checking IMDb ratings for movies currently in theaters gives me an idea what's worth watching or not. Most blockbuster films like superman vs batman I'll probably watch regardless no matter how ****ty it is. But for the other movies out there it gives me an idea of what is truly worth seeing and not. There are a lot of lesser known movies that are quality work that I probably wouldn't have gotten to see if I didn't see that it got good reviews.

I understand people don't like listening to other people's opinions, but when you factor in the thousands of ratings on IMDb you begin to see what movies are objectively better than others. I don't need to watch shawshank and twilight first to realize shawshank is the better movie.

Who needs ratings for that comparison. That one should be clear from the movie posters.

I've had so many times that I like movies other people don't and vice-versa. I sometimes look at ratings, but never use them to make a decision on whether or not I'll watch a show or movie. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Huff watches a gazilllion hours of tv/Netflix anyway working from home. Just try it out.

Movies are a lot different than TV. A 10 hour season of a TV show is digestible with a distracted mind (and it's only certain shows...can't follow Legion at all unless you are 100% watching). Most good movies are not digestible with a distracted mind. The story moves too fast. If I watch movies while I work, it's almost always something I've seen.

I'll probably enjoy a 6.8 rated movie involving UT football more than a 7.7 rated movie about a ballerina and her life story. But most of the time, if it has good reviews I enjoy it and if it has bad reviews I don't really enjoy it. I definitely don't agree with reading one or two reviews and making a decision. But with IMDb I've noticed the ratings usually fall in line with what I personally believe as well. With so many ratings it gets less subjective and more objective.

If there's a movie with a plot I don't care for then I'm probably not going to bother watching it even if it has above average review. If there is a movie with a plot I do care for and it's not an abomination at the review tables (looking at you fantastic four), then I'll probably check it out. But every now and then there is a movie that's 8.5+ on IMDb and I've literally never not enjoyed a movie ranked that high as far as I remember. I care little about musicals, but LA LA Lands reviews got my attention and it really lived up to it and I genuinely enjoyed the movie.

The wisdom of the crowds. They are not always right about movies, IMO, but it's better than any other reference point. Ask the Audience was right an astounding 91% of the time on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Not really that astounding considering only 26% would technically need to know the correct answer for the audience to be right. Which would mean up to 74% could be idiots, and the audience still be right.

Buth that's not how it worked out in practice. As I recall, it was rarely a close margin. It would be like 75% getting it right. Sometimes just 50% or so, but it was extremely rare that you would see something like 26, 25, 25, 24. Probably never happened. Even when the audience got it wrong, probably still 40% got it right.

Getting a specific question/answer correct and just merely having an opinion on something are two different things.

I went extreme with it, but the audience getting it right 91% of the time isn't impressive when you really look at it. 75% would be decent, and 50% wouldn't be good to me, that's still a lot of dumb people. Oh and factor in that some probably just randomly guessed and the number that actually knew the answer drops more.

The OA

I've not seen a topic for this show but OTOH it would be a little difficult to find 'OA' in a search.

Slow. That's about the best I can describe this show. Painfully slow. A story within a story that drags. Can someone tell me that it gets better by the end of season 1??
