NCST Offense

You guys also had Cinci at home. We had them on a thursday night at their place. It makes a difference. It was also one of our worst performances over the last two years. Not trying to make excuses, but basing the quality of our team off of one game, that game, is a mistake.

I was at the game. For being such a small stadium, it was pretty rockin. NC State had too many injuries on D and were outmatched/winded. They didn't have any life to them and Cincy was just on fire. It's like they could no wrong and the pack couldn't get anything to go their way.

Everyone mentions the fact they lost to Cincy, but they never mention the fact they beat Clemson.

Also, if you look at the last game these teams played, there's no doubt who looks better coming into this year

I have certainly mentioned both. I am a firm believer that Clemson was overrated. The only thing that stopped WV from scoring more than 70 was that even the back ups got tired of doing 100 yard wind sprints. Exposed is the only way to describe Clemson. Like FSU they get some media love, but seem to crumble when the pressure is on.

As far as losing to Cincy, there is also another comparison: UT>Vandy>Wake>NCSU; just like UT>Cincy>NCSU.

I know that is flimsy and debatable, but is there a reverse scenario that proves it wrong? In other words, did NCSU beat a team that beat UT. Not that I can find. Since almost everybody beat us last year, that communicates volumes to me.

EDIT: Stupid post is stupid. I apologize. I am tired.

NCSU>Clemson>Auburn>South Carolina>UT
or
NCSU>Clemson>Auburn>Florida>UT

Im dumb. Forgive me.

They have three rb's that are pretty good.

Their oline is a veteran group but ranked 98th in sacks allowed last year(not vs SEC defenses either). They also ranked 109th in rushing last year.

Their te is decent(9rec 84yds last year)

They lost three of the top four wr's. They only have two wr's that had at least 10 catches last year and one of those is hurt. Tobias Palmer is the other and he's pretty good(47 rec 600+yds last year). They are pretty thin and very inexperienced at wr.

Here's their wr's and backups:
wr1-redshirt senior Tobias Palmer
Backup 1-redshirt Jr Rashard Smith(1rec 6yds last year)
Backup 2- Hakeem Flowers redshirt freshman
wr2- redshirt Jr Quinton Payton(7rec 107yds last year, 10th on team in rec)
Backup 1- redshirt freshman Maurice Morris
Backup 2- redshirt freshman Charlie Hegedus

I think if we can pressure Glennon he's gonna have a frustrating night. Those wr's after Palmer may have decent talent but that much inexperience will surely cause some problems for their passing game. I think we will make stopping the run a priority and see if Glennon can beat us with a questionable wr corps.
Hegedus is a true freshman. Has impressed in camp. Wanted to be a Vol

Hegedus really wanted to go to Georgia. Maybe Tenn as well, but all I've heard about is UGA.

Cincy would have beaten NCST also.

Since all we have is last year:

Passing: UT 2911 yards 18 TD
NCSU 3120 yards 32 TD

Rushing: UT 1081 yards 10 TD
NCSU 1363 yards 11 TD

Pass Defense: UT 2134 yards 14 TD
NCSU 2908 yards 17 TD

Rush Defense: UT 1952 yards 17 TD
NCSU 1702 yards 18 TD

Now remember they did play an extra game.

They were better than us at passing and rushing (barely in both if you exclude touchdowns). We were actually way better than them at pass defense, but worse at rush defense.

Here is the key. We lost our leading receiver, but they have lost 3 out of the top 4 receivers.

Both run games should improve or at least stay the same.

That run defense that was better than us, none of those LB's are back. They are deathly thin in that area.

What I'm trying to say is. Forget about the competition we played and the fact that Bray and Hunter were injured. We still look better on paper as far as moving from last year to this year. Four More Days.

Need to remember that those stats include only two complete games played by Bray when he was healthy. Stats are not comparable.

Does NC State have a running game. I normally do alot more research but have been too busy to really do alot of looking online. I know they have Amerson and a QB that was pretty good last year BUT I could care less about last year. Too many so called "experts" look at last years games and not enough of "this" years talent/recruiting/line-up etc...But anyways does NC State have a good running attack.

They have a huge and very experienced offensive line returning, which will help open up holes. They have three running backs. Their third string was productive in the past, but he hasn't played in a game in almost two years and was just declared eligible a couple weeks ago. Doubt he sees any carries after the first half and I question his conditioning.
Their first string running back had a huge fall camp and did really the past six months and their 2nd string was the starter last year. I think both teams running games could be the difference in this game, but major question marks for both teams.

Our D-line is bigger than their OL. (I think. Someone posted stat comparisons on here a couple days ago)

Here are those comparisons someone put up. Looks like we average a little bigger (didnt do any math, just looks like it)

NG - McCullers, 6'6", 377, 4*, JR
DE - Couch, 6'2", 299, 4*, JR
JLB -Smith, 6'2", 244, 4*, JR
SLB - Maggitt, 6'3'', 240, 4*, So

NCSU O-Line

How good is Crisp? Has very nice size for a tackle.

Young and inexperienced last year but word around practice this off season was he was really starting to figure it out. Enough so that they put them on the blind side. He seemed to be playing pretty well the last few games of last season as well. Our line overall was not great last year, but hopefully the massive amount of combined starts will start to show.

He was a really high recruit coming out of high school....I think this is his year to really shine!

This game really wont be close ....UT wins with ease......NC state sux. I look for the Vols to have an offensive explosion. State just cant keep up. Bray then celebrates like Garcia with Da Rick. Go Vols.

Hegedus really wanted to go to Georgia. Maybe Tenn as well, but all I've heard about is UGA.

Oklahoma State offered Hegedus late and he stuck with his NC State commitment. There were a lot of people that thought UGA was going to offer, but they never did. He had more yards receiving than any receiver in the state of Georgia last year. I think he is the second fastest guy on NC States team, great hands and leaping ability, but not as good with after the catch moves as Tobias Palmer. A UGA or UT offer would have been a tougher decision for him as he initially wanted to play in the SEC. NC State did a great job of recruiting him, so he might not have flipped even with a UGA or UT offer. I think UT labeled him a possession receiver and didn't recruit him, although he was at a couple of UT's summer camps. I expect a lot of second guessing will be settled by his performance on Friday.

Not sure you can say that about a true freshman's very first game, that he might not even play in. Rest was spot on.

It was my understanding that NC State plays 7 receivers, with 2,3,4 receiver sets. Hegedus is listed on the depth chart at #3 and O'Brian has made a few comments that I took as meaning he would play. Who knows what their game plan is, but assumming they are not successful running it down our throats, I'm thinking we will see him some. If he doesn't play much, or doesn't get thrown to, then yes...too early to tell. NC State is still trying to sort out their WR situation, so I think we will see a lot of different receivers. I think he will be a factor, he's the kind of receiver that quietly goes out and makes a bunch of catches.

You might be right about him playing more than I expect. Even so, hard to determine how right or wrong you were about a player in his first start ever. He seems like he's just under SEC athletic ability, which is what NCSU makes a living out of. Glad to have him.
