Good read even though Maisel still carries USC water...

Lane Kiffin, Pat Haden, J.K. McKay start to dig USC out of deep ditch - ESPN

I found it interesting (and humorous) that USC now has less scholarship players than UT.

"USC heads into its scholarship deductions already suffering an acute shortage of players. In a sport with a limit of 85 players on scholarship, the Trojans have, as of last Thursday, 67. How USC arrived at such a low number is a combination of poor planning, bad luck and the impending arrival of the penalties."

That's already a lighter roster than UT.

Bad luck??? WTF, they grotesquely cheated and get what they deserve. And don't think for a second that LK and EO aren't still figuring out ways to work the grey areas of recruiting!. I would like to see a major policy shift in the NCAA (or new association) to start penalizing, suspending, banning, and fining coaches like Kiffin and Calipari and agents, schools, and boosters as well. Monetary fines are the only way to stop their dirty tactics.

As for the NFL 53-man roster approach (and spin).. 18-21 year olds aren't going to respond very well long-term to that system. They're still having too much fun to have that much focus! It should be fun to watch USC's plight!

All it does is open the door for Kiffin to sign a ridiculous amount of EE's and not run into the this season's scholarship limitations.

I'm not saying he will, I'm just saying it's a possibility.

How many EE's or even top notch players have committed to USC since the ruling?

Wouldn't it be pretty difficult to early enroll a ton of guys at USC (that are USC-caliber players) with their academic standards?

But theoretically, if the limit is 28 per class (NCAA limits) then they could backcount ten early enrollees since the limits wouldn't affect them last year and they signed 18.

I defer to the expert panel though.

28 is an SEC rule not an NCAA rule.

Say they sign 10 EE's and then use their 15 scholarships. That's a full class. Probation is effectively cut by a year.

Something to think about because Orgeron and Kiffin know the rules and will bend the hell out of them.

Guess I was basing it off of this, I was thinking the NCAA followed suit even though the SEC was first:

Ivan Maisel: Coaches Know How to Find Loopholes

The SEC athletic directors suggested that the signing limit from signing day through May 31 be set at 30. The presidents agreed upon 28. The NCAA also adopted the 28-man limit, although few schools outside the SEC have signed more than 25.

But regardless, it doesn't change the fact that they could take about ten EE's. But these high caliber kids would still have to work ridiculously hard to meet USC standards by December I would think.

The school's standards don't really matter because they defer to league policy. The SEC's admission standard is actually more stringent than the Pac #'s, which is why that lb (Stanley?) didn't go to UT. USC will get in who ever they want as a private school.

per clay travis twitter...

"Make no mistake the NCAA put the screws to Reaves because they want Kiffin and Orgeron. Did he buckle and end Kiffin and Co.? Not sure."

Kiffin and Orgeron will be okay since hatvol is their lawyer....

They're not going to get Kiffin and Orgeron this time because Reaves is going to admit to everything.

The NCAA might have but I don't think they've done it yet. There were talks about it.

It's already been said, but admission standards are really made up more by conference than individual schools.

Of course, Vandy and Stanford and the like are harder to get in to, but the rules can be bent if the conference has lower standards.

I suppose I'd just like to know how many of USC's current commitments for '11 and "higher profile" USC recruiting targets would have the ability to get in that soon.

To backcount about ten guys and get them enrolled, would they have to settle on a lower level of player than they're used to?

I mean in Matt Barkley's class he was the only one who enrolled early, but I would gather that had more to do with Carroll not worrying about it than the eligibility requirements of the rest of their class. Lane was certainly getting a few solid kids enrolled early at Tennessee, so maybe it doesn't really affect anything after all.

he'll find a way around it. But he is gonna get bitten in the arse. I hope, with all my heart that kiffin does something worse. He can take his cocky attitude and tell all those kids that USC is their "dream school" and then hand them off to some players who will show them a "fun time in LA". Pound those SOBs and get them more violations.
