Muss was always going to go back to SoCal to be close to his mom. He mentioned California any chance he got. And his personality isn’t easy for everyone to handle at times. That combined with an awful final season made things start to get a little tense before he left.Arkansas doesn’t have the donor or fan base that is as intense as North Carolina’s…. This isn’t debatable.
Their coaching hires before Cal left Kentucky prove that. Somehow I’m supposed to believe Arkansas’ donor class let Musselman leave for USC solely because his wife didn’t like Fayetteville all while he had them rolling to their best stretch since the mid 90’s…..

Mike Anderson and Musselman both made deep tournament runs at their previous schools so it’s not like they were underwhelming hires on paper. But with Tyson bankrolling NIL now things are different than they were before NIL either way. Cal and Muss have both had top 3 recruiting classes at Arkansas so talent acquisition hasn’t been a problem.
Dude - Arkansas didn’t let Miss walk over $, they mutually parted ways over “boy friend gate”.Arkansas and their supposed deep pockets let a coach leave in the midst of Arkansas’s best run in almost 3 decades. They lucked into Cal in that he was ready to dump Kentucky.
Regarding talent, Arkansas will benefit from Cal just because he’s going to always bring in multiple 5 stars year in and out.
But the act like Arkansas is a school that’s gonna go all out for basketball any means necessary is absurd. They let Muss walk. One would think the supposed rabid donor base would make him say no to be highest paid coach in the country after 2 elite 8’s and sweet 16 in 3 years, let alone the highest paid in the SEC.
So my main point stands, there is no comparison or equal footing to UNC’s donor and fan base when it comes to Arkansas.
No one in their right mind should recruit Todd Golden or Nate Oates. They will come with legal trouble. This may be an unrealistic top 5, but if UNC lets go off Hubert their hot board should be:
1. Todd Golden
2. Nate Oats
3. Dan Hurley
4. Tommy Lloyd
5. Dusty May
Tar Heels are among the bluest of blue bloods, and the only coaches that should be "off the table" are ones that coach at Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky. Lloyd and May are probably unrealistic, but Carolina should still kick the tires (that being said, Oats and Golden would both jump at the chance to coach in Chapel Hill IMO)
This isn’t necessarily directed at you, but I still don’t understand why people keep treating Florida as a stepping-stone job. Everyone always said it was an automatic that Billy Donovan would leave for Kentucky, yet he turned them down both times they came after him. Why should Golden leave for UNC? Florida has three national titles and four Final Fours in the last 20 years. It’s a huge brand with a top-notch NIL. Yes, historically UNC is the better program, but that doesn’t really mean much anymore. Look no further than Bryan Hodgson at USF turning down Syracuse to go to Providence instead. This may be an unrealistic top 5, but if UNC lets go off Hubert their hot board should be:

I feel like Florida blows hot and cold when it comes to basketball: they had a generational coach in Donovan who left to go to the NBA - no shame in that - and they replaced him with Danny White's brother (who is the very definition of mediocre). Now they seem to have lucked into Golden, and he's getting lots of NIL support at the moment, but how long will that last? Especially if UF decides to go "all in" on football and throw their support behind SumrallThis isn’t necessarily directed at you, but I still don’t understand why people keep treating Florida as a stepping-stone job. I doubt it's all luck if it keeps happening. Somebody down there knows what they are doing. Remember they went to a Final Four right before Donovan too.I feel like Florida blows hot and cold when it comes to basketball: they had a generational coach in Donovan who left to go to the NBA - no shame in that - and they replaced him with Danny White's brother (who is the very definition of mediocre). I think they would have preferred to keep him but again, it wasn’t about the money for Muss. The shine from his tournament runs had started to fade after finishing near dead last in the SEC (Arkansas even finished 10th in the conference for one of the Sweet 16 runs) and his toxic temperament wearing on everyone around him didn’t help.So Arkansas chose to let their best coach in near 3 decades leave. So much for all these die hard donors, win at all cost folks that I was told exist and are on same level as UNC donor and fan base. lol.
Every program runs hot and cold depending on the coach. See KY with Billy Gillespie, UNC with Matt Doherty, Louisville with Kenny Payne, and Indiana with every coach since Knight. There’s no program in the country that’s idiot-proof.I feel like Florida blows hot and cold when it comes to basketball: they had a generational coach in Donovan who left to go to the NBA - no shame in that - and they replaced him with Danny White's brother (who is the very definition of mediocre).
