NCAA To Smack Tennessee, Lane Kiffin

Clay comes off much differently in his columns than he did in his book. Much more confrontation now than he was in the book...He does despise Kiffin, and has said from the start that this investigation was more about him than it was about Tennessee. Of course that was before Pearl decided to admit he lied to the NCAA.

Sooo he was wrong?

At least he waited until now to release the story.

Exactly!! It could have been a bit worse for ya'll if it had got out before NSD. Amazing how LK is still getting such a strong class with hids rep and the shape USC is in to begin with.

I'll defend Travis on this a bit...

1. Yes, most of the article was old news for close followers of the program. However, that is what you have to do when you write breaking news. You have to assume that your readers don't know the back-story and fill in all the gaps.

2. The news here wasn't that Tennessee will get punished. Everyone knew that. Its that A) the punishments will reach Kiffin and Reaves who are no longer on staff and B) Reaves did, in fact, give the Orange Pride members direct and clear instructions to improperly contact the recruits. It has been speculated that even if that happened there wouldn't be proof. According to Clay's sources, the proof is there and the NCAA has it.

3. For all the "I thought Clay Travis was a UT fan" people out there...we should be thanking him. If he had this story before yesterday afternoon (which it is safe to assume he did based on the time it was posted) and held onto it until all the faxes were in on NSD then he was placing his fandom over his job as a journalist. While the people at FanHouse can't be crazy about this we, as Vols fans, should appreciate the loyalty.

4. If it was completely untrue or even just unsubstantiated rumors then the beat guys would be bashing him over this. If anything, it has been the opposite. Rucker basically congratulated Travis on twitter last night and said "I hate to admit this, most of my NCAA questions recently have been about hoops." Implying that he may have missed something by not asking more specific football questions.

I'm not sure he was wrong, at least not initially. At the end of the day the institution is ruled to be responsible for the behavior of it's coaches. But, when the compliance department and the Athletic department fully cooperates, and the coach has been a part of other run-ins with the NCAA, and that coach was only at said school for one year I would think the NCAA would have more issues with the coach then the school.

I think Travis amped up the headline a bit. If Tennessee continues to cooparate (keep in mind that having a coach like Dooley now will surely help matters) and Kiffin continues to play coy, especially after snubbing his nose at the NCAA by signing 30 players knowing that 10 will have to be removed immediately if the appeal doesn't pass, the NCAA will punish him more severly than Tennessee.

Pearl is the one that brought the NCAA here. And Kiffin isn't going to get in trouble for this.

Is it safe to assume that Tennessee provided them with what the NCAA needed to catch Reaves in this? And at what point will Reaves just admit that he got his instructions from Kiffin? That's been Travis' contention from the start, that it was up to Reaves to safe Kiffin or bury him. At the moment it looks like he is trying to save him, but how long will that hold?

Why would he "bury" his brother-in-law?

Pearl is the one that brought the NCAA here. And Kiffin isn't going to get in trouble for this.

I would agree with that, although the Pearl situation puts more of a target on the Athletic Department as a whole and brings the chance that the football program might get hit with more severe penalties than fit the violation.

But still, I can't imagine the penalties being major, such as anything more than a few reduced scholarships and a slight reduction on contacting recruits. It's just ironic that they are punishing a coaching staff (outside of Chaney and Thompson) that didn't create this mess.

Given the horrible PR year the NCAA has had, how do they sell limiting Derek Dooley's contact with recruits because of Lane Kiffin?

Not sure if how true/untrue any of this is, but I have "heard" (TIFWIW) that part of what may save UT in this is that the compliance office had well-documented the conversations they had with Kiffin about what they thought was ok and what wasn't.

I'm not saying the program is going to come out clean in all of this, but their may be enough CYOA evidence to where the program isn't totallty hammered.

I'm not up on all the NCAA rules and reg and all that stuff, but I do have 3 questions that if someone can help me to understand them, I'll be more informed.

1. How can the NCAA overlook intentional violations at certain schools then want to "slam" others with less serious violatons?

2. Coach DD wasn't here, neither was a large percentage of these players, so why are they being punished for the misdeeds of goodbye Kiffin and his underhanded entourage?

3. To whom does someone complain about the NCAA? I mean there are some serious violations that's taken place at other schools and you don't hear about them.

Just when it looks like we're on our way to having a fb team that will command respect, along comes the Kiffin spider to sit down beside'us. But we need to chase this spider away FOR GOOD! Go Vols!

Why would he "bury" his brother-in-law?

Listen-this is just what Travis spoke about last year when this all started. Plus, at some point family members have a falling out-happens all the time. Given how Reaves was left here holding the 8-ball, and now has an awesome job at New Mexico-what is he holding onto with Kiffin anyways?

At some point I would assume Reaves will be under oath with the NCAA, if he hasn't been already. They will give him a chance to correct his story. Does he lie again to save Kiffin? Neither option is a good career move, but if you want to stay in college coaching at some point you will need to stop lying to the NCAA in order to protect the brother-in-law who bolted for USC without telling you, leaving you in a getaway car on empty.

There is no answer for any of these. The NCAA is as corrupt, misguided, and idiotic as they come.

I'm worried about how the basketball issues and these problems together could make all punishments worse.

We have a BINGO!!! Add to it as it appears that we are under a Microscope....A path of violations, as small as they seem will and continue to mount....In the past they were minor.....It is overexaggerated and misconcrued unfortunatly for us....For the NCAA not to adequately or competantly address the Auburn situation makes one wonder....

This is overflowing and it will affect all athletics in general.... Bottom line is Money and the NCAA does not like anybody getting one up on others...

They will did for the I gotcha moment to create as much Choas as possible because of their incompentance and someone burned by the program...

Add to it a SEC Commissioner who has overstepped his authority....

When all is said and done.....We will find that the enemy lies within the organization or did in the past they were jilted and turned us in.....

Lane K was a cheater and we should have known better.......Pearl got caught up in the moment...

Lane Kiffen hired Reaves and without a doubt he was in on Reaves recruiting indescretions.Lane Kiffen IMO should be banned from coaching.He was at USC during the Reggie Bush scandal and brought his unethical sleezy tactics to UT and from last reports was making phone calls to a recruit yesterday as a violation according to an ESPN reporter.If Pat Hayden was hired to get USC on a path to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.He will fire Lane Kiffen and rid his program of a terminal cancer regardless of what kind of recruiting class he delivered.He will fall and fall hard because cheating is engrained in his soul.

How did Super Steve deal with it..... USC(e) was never called out... Reason being is that Steve had a handle on it and Kiff dragged Reaves into it....

Do you all think there is truth to this and how bad would it be? Are we talking about a few schollies lost or worse? Any insight?

I'm in graduate school with one of the former players and I've picked his brain from time to time about Kiffin. He said if we only knew how Kiffin was from an inside perspective, as opposed to what we hear, many of us wouldn't have been so upset when he left for USC. He also says he's concerned about the NCAA letter.

He was a Fulmer recruit, so I take that into account, but he throughly convinced me that Kiffin was the most unethical and disrespectful (to the Tennessee brand) coach he'd ever encountered.

None of this is news or will matter to anyone that is over Kiffin, but hopefully it can help those still enamoured by him to set their love free.

1. What evidence do you have of that? If you referring to Auburn, they didn't develop sufficient proof of misconduct at all at Auburn at that time;

2. Because EVERY program would use this excuse -- hire someone, let them break the rules, then when they formally "find out" break ties and plead "golly gee, none of these players & coaches were the bad actors, so let us off". A program is responsible for what it's coaches do; period.

3. Complaining about the NCAA is a complete waste of time.

If what TC reported is true:

1. Major violations;
2. Coaches directly responsible;
3. Most important -- coaches LIED, and tried to cover it up.

The intersection of issues are all hot-button issues for the p.r.-oriented NCAA -- misuse of social networking, misuse of hostesses, misuse of contact methods, by a high-profile coach already targeted by the NCAA.

Sanctions/Consequences Capable:

1. Bad P.R. hit for a program like ours;
2. Probation;
3. Limits on recruiting contacts;
4. Scholarship reductions;
5. Some sort of Kiffin-specific punishment on him.
