Or is it Tennesssee’s decision not to start classes until January 24th? Sounds very late start to me. I couldn’t wait to get back to school from Christmas break.

Seriously thou, this is an example of everything at the school being in sync together. This just doesn’t hurt FB recruiting. It also impacts BB with few students being at home games for almost the entire January schedule.

I think Verse had already visited so I don’t think this is an issue with him but it could be the Wyoming WR & others. And why you haven’t heard much about transfers yet.

The reason you haven't heard a ton about transfers yet is that the roster numbers are uncertain and the portal is a long process, there are going to be people entering it right up to after spring practice. You want to be selective and try and be sure you get guys who can help you, not just gobble up the first thing available.

The NCAA rule was long in place when UT-Knoxville decided to try instituting a "Winter mini-term" from the 3rd to 21st of January.

This effectively pushed the Spring semester, which would normally begin just after the new year, back by three weeks.

Seems to me the university could easily have worked with the NCAA to have their cake and eat it, too. They could've gotten NCAA agreement to consider the mini-term a part of Spring college courses. They could have named it the "early spring mini-term." They could've done any number of things to give their athletic program more flexibility.

I don't think blaming this on the NCAA makes much sense. I'd look a bit closer to home if I were the fella (Zach Ragan) who wrote that article.

Well, the school put in this extra mini term because of the number of students that were going to be 3 to 6 credits short for graduating in May. As of now, it will only be for this academic year. They were trying to make up for students who lost classes due to the pandemic. From what I understand, there will be another standard mini term at the end of the semester as well.

As for working with the NCAA to work around this, that wasn’t really possible. If transferring players had wanted to enroll in the mini term, then they would’ve been eligible to take visits at the time. But not all of them were interested in doing that since it started so soon after the new year.

Tennessee set the date, not NCAA.

Didn't hurt with Neyor.

Makes sense but schools that started after rLabor day go back to class before 24th. UTC starts classes on Monday. MS state begins on 18th.
(Just a joke) -UT is always late to the party. I know, bad humor on my part. 😝

I don't see the point in this rule, especially as it applies to transfer portal. If they want to have a dead period to give students a holiday break, just have it end after 9 January for all schools. Seems stupid to me, but I guess typical for NCAA.
