NCAA changing kickoff rules

It will hurt us:

Our return game has a chance to be a real threat and our coverage team has been better than average. More touch backs doesn't sound like a good thing to me.

I think it will help us more than hurt. Special teams hasn't exactly been our forte the last few years. But if Palardy can get his **** together I'd like to see it as is.

We were better than most think on kick off coverage last year. That was a winning performance in that area IMO.

Our return team could be special as well.

I agree our coverage was good. I'm not a proponent for change I just think it would take more pressure of Palardy.

Not sure what team you were watching. I'll have to check some stats, but we certainly didn't appear to have either side of special teams under control.

That Arkansas game was a real delight, in particular.

The NFL moved from the 30 to the 35 this past year. It made the kickoffs extremely boring!

For both kickoffs and punt returns, it is nice to see the Vols have 4-5 guys who are strong candidates for the job. Pig, McNeil, Young, Lane, etc. On tape, Patterson is absolutely dazzling in those roles. He has tremendous skills in the open field.

I find it funny that the NCAA thinks it will be safer by only allowing players to have a 5-yard running start. They're not hitting anybody until they've been running at least 20-25 yards untouched down the field, and they get to top speed by the time the ball is kicked as it is now. With this change, all it will do is put them at their top speed 5 yards past the kickoff. How does that change how hard the players are getting hit? The only way to do that is to make all the gunners touch the 50-yard line with their @ss on every kickoff.

Take away the running start, move the kickoff back to the 35 and bring back the rule where a kick through the end zone resulted in the ball going to the 30 yard line.

From a return-only viewpoint, all I remember from that game was the punt return Adams had. We only kicked off twice in that game, and IIRC, nothing really happened on those.

Would you define the difference between a punt and kickoff? It might help in this discussion.

they are trying to create more touchbacks..it doesnt have anything to do with slowing down the players

I think they could solve most of the issues if they'd just take away the kicking tee. Kickoffs would be shorter and lower so there'd be more returns and less high speed collisions.

Because the public perception is that it's extremely dangerous. Playing football is dangerous, period.
Really? I had no idea.

The line between tough and crazy has always moved in football. I could cite about 10 things off the top of my head that used to be legal but now aren't because they were deemed to be dangerous.

Im tired of people tinkering with the game because of safety.

It's not safe and can not be made safe.....and you're destroying the game

We are not talking about NFL kickers here though.

Okay, you're right. No need to get all pissy pee pants on me.

I'm not sure that there's no overlap between PR and KR coverage, but they were good overall on KR.
