“I liked it. I liked it a lot,” said Rooks, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 26 overall prospect and No. 5 wide receiver in the 2020 class. “It was my first time there, so just tried to soak everything in, just get that type of thing. Nothing too heavy, but next time I’m probably going to try to get into detail with the coaches, sit down with them, chop it up on their offensive scheme. “Really, I couldn’t establish my interest until I visited. But, yeah, I like the campus a lot. I’m just looking forward to seeing everything.”

“I really liked the practice,” he said. “It was very interesting how fast the practice goes and the tempo of the practice, and you could tell that they’re pushing to run a lot of plays a game. And the more plays, the more opportunities to succeed as a receiver and as a team. That was kind of interesting to see.”

“I saw Coach Johnson, he’s really technical,” Rooks said. “He’s a perfectionist, and the receiver position is a very technical position. It’s really good to see how hard he is on his receivers to strive for perfection.

“I really like how the staff wasn’t very forgiving when it came to the coaching. You know how sometimes, when the recruits come around, everything lightens up at practice a little bit. They were still full-tilt, talking to players just how they would if we’re not there, and that was good to see. That was really good to see.”

While Rooks said he had to return home near the end of Tennessee’s practice, he got a chance to speak at least briefly with Vols tight ends coach Brian Niedermeyer.

“That’s who I’ve been in contact with,” Rooks said of Niedermeyer. “It was something quick to say, ‘Hey, thanks for coming,’ and basically have a safe drive on the way back. It really wasn’t to sit down and talk. I wish it was, but we were pushed for time.”

Rooks said he’ll be back soon to get a better look at UT, he was short on time for this visit but liked what he saw.

Also Neidermeyer is mentioned by a lot of recruits.

Remember thinking “wth” when we’d see Niedermeyer in every recruiting pic after the hire. Flashing some weird sign that WAS NOT the Vols. Figured he was future support staff on the road helping out until the real staff was hired. He’s been for real!

Haha no joke. He is everywhere. And supposedly a good coach too according to the reports.

It’s a good mix, the staff has guys that clearly only relate on a football level to the kids (which is totally fine), and then guys like neidermeyer that can talk ball but also “chop it up” about migos and meek mill or whatever else. I like it.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass... I'm not familiar with who or what migos and meek mill are. Celebrities or something?

Tennessee Vols football recruiting: Four-star WR Porter Rooks set to return to Tennessee

The 6-foot-1, 186-pound Rooks traveled to Tennessee's campus for the first time on March 31, making a brief stop in Knoxville that allowed him to see a portion of one of the Vols' spring practices.

After the visit, he told GoVols247 that he "definitely" was interested in Tennessee and planning to visit the Vols again in the coming months.

“I liked it. I liked it a lot,” Rooks said at the time.

Rooks said after the visit that he had "been in contact with" Tennessee tight ends coach Brian Niedermeyer, and he "really liked" seeing first-year Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt's staff in action on the practice field.

Tennessee extended a scholarship offer to Rooks in late January. He now holds offers from nearly 30 schools, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Miami, South Carolina and Virginia Tech also have hosted him on visits this offseason. He told 247Sports' Don Callahan last month that he planned to go on "a good bit" of visits this summer. While he hadn't scheduled any trips at the time, he said North Carolina was among the other schools he expected to visit soon.

“On my first visit there, even though it was brief, I got a good vibe from them,” said Rooks, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 27 overall prospect and No. 5 wide receiver in the 2020 class. “I liked the campus. I liked the atmosphere. I just liked the whole vibe of the University of Tennessee, so going back was a must for me. “I’m glad I did. I had fun. I enjoyed the trip. It was definitely worth it. … It was a great visit. I just can’t wait to get back up.”

“I got to really get close to some coaches,” Rooks said. “I was hanging out with Coach Johnson the whole time, pretty much. There wasn’t many recruits there, so he was able to really focus in on me, and I was able to get some one-on-one time with him. I talked to Coach Pruitt for a long time. “Coach Niedermeyer, I think he recruits this area. Of course, I got to talk to him, as well, so it was just great to really sit down and talk to him and get to know him as a person and as a coach.”

“My dad, my mom and I, we sat down and we talked to Coach Pruitt for, I want to say, probably an hour, an hour and a half, just really getting to know each other,” Rooks said. “He and everybody on staff seems very transparent. They’re not sugarcoating anything, and you have to respect that in the recruiting process because we know how things can be told in the recruiting process and how the truth is stretched a little bit — that type of thing.”

“The only thing I didn’t get to see (in March) was the stadium, and, of course, that’s a big part of Tennessee, so it was great to see that,” Rooks said. “It’s huge. You can tell the fans are loud and love Tennessee football. I’m looking forward to really experiencing that game-day atmosphere. “When I heard it holds over 100,000, that’s all you had to tell me. That blew me away. It’s a large stadium — very large.”

Looking pretty good for the Vols early on for a Top 5 WR in 2020. He said whenever he knows where he wants to go he'll decide, he doesn't want to waste any time once he knows. Could be a Vol soon? hmmm

“It was just a good visit,” Rooks said. “The first time I came up there I didn't get to stay very long, but this time I got to get down to the details and visit with coach. Since there wasn't that many visitors there so I really got to get some one on one time with coach (Tyson) Helton and coach (David) Johnson. I talked to coach Pruitt for a while. It was just great to sit down and talk to them and get a whole feel for campus. I had a great time.”

“I got to know coach Johnson really well this trip. We had a lot of one on one time,” Rooks explained. “Coach Neidermeyer had a tight end visitor in so he was with him a lot of the time. I did get to talk to him some of course, but coach Johnson and I got pretty close over this trip and I look forward to getting to know him more. “He's very transparent. He's as real as they come and that's something you really respect in the recruiting process. A lot of things can get lost or sugar coated. He just seems really transparent and I really respect that.”

Rooks made the trip with his parents and they got to visit with head coach Jeremy Pruitt for the first time. “You can tell he's strictly about football and he loves football. He can talk about ball for hours. We spent time talking getting to know each other. My mom and dad were with me as well. Coach Pruitt got to get to know them more and more about my background. It was just great to get to know him a little bit more as a person and not just a coach,” Rooks said.

“My parents thought it was a great visit as well,” Rooks said. “We are looking forward to getting back up there and spending more time with the staff. “The first time I visited I didn't really get an inside look. This time I really got to see everything and take it all in. So definitely, they left a good impression.”
