NC State fans.......WOW

One other thing they don't realize. They have NO film on us. None. Bray was either hurt or out for most of last year, had one receiver, we have a new D, and our O-Line has finally got a pretty good coach and hopefully will be a different bunch. We know what, how, when, and how often they are going to do what they do. We know their tendencies, we know that Amerson jumps routes, we know Glennon's deep accuracy may not be good especially if he is hurried.....I don't know. This game doesn't depend at all on NCSU, it depends on whether or not the Vols want to win.

Every frog praises its own pond so NCSU fans outlook shouldn't be a surprise. The real question is why does a Vols fan go to their pond then complain about the amount of algae growing there?

If NC State is counting on Amerson to win this game for them then they have big, big, problems. With their problems at LB, Rivera and our Tailbacks should be open all game long. Rivera could have a career day.

I just want to know which of our WR's they will put Amerson on to cover since he is the player they never shut up about, at least for us we have four amazing players on offense they we never stop talking about.

considering the game will be played at a nuteral site... and both teams will be shaking off the rust... and neither team being completly proven... i believe We (Tennessee) have the talent to pull this game out but i do however believe it is going to be a much closer game than most expect (Both Fan Bases) this game plays out more to me like 28-17 with UT pulling away in the 4th with a late touchdown...

I posted this in another thread but probably better suited here,

I've seen opinions on this board for the NCSU game range from being a toss up, to an absolute massacre. I understand that no true fan is going to chalk up a loss in what should be a competitive game, but I'm not sure where some of the predictions are coming from. I understand your schedule was tougher than ours last year, but you were a 5 win team. We won 8 after starting off the season very shaky. Also, breaking down the positions, Tenn is only clearly better in WR's and I'm guessing linebackers since ours are questionable. I could make the argument for our players in almost every other position. Don't take this the wrong way, but it seems a lot (all) of your fans are looking over us for some reason. The ACC thing? What is it? Something I'm missing completely?

Let me have it

1. My take is that your post while understandably is slanted to NCSU as you'd expect any decent fan of a team to be, it's done with class. Hopefully, our most obnoxious fans learn from you example.

2. Rather than challenge your assessment which I think is probably more accurate than I wish it was, I will ask a few questions.

a. You do know we got McCullers to boost our DL?
b. You do know we expect a beast DT/DE Dante Philips to join the team ready to play?
c. You're aware our WR corps is more than just DR and JH?
d. You know that there is a highly rated JUCO WR, and at least four potentially dangerous incoming frosh WRs, I think two prototype WRs and two speed burners?
e. You do know we, perhaps for the first time since Condredge Holloway, have an option QB the coaches believe they'd be dumb to keep off the field?

I think NCSU is going to do themselves proud and test Tennessee early on. But then, factors such as pent up frustration in the team, a no retreat and no surrender attitude, even seeing you guys as a substitute for getting even with the game UNC stole from us, that NCSU is going to face one nasty Vols squad and that will make all the difference.

Pretty simple. For the record, I am one of those fans that forsee a massacre.

The Cincy-UT game last year was the last time we were healthy. After that, we slowly lost players on an already thin roster.

We killed Cincy.

By all accounts, our team should be light years better than that team that played Cincy; in every aspect. We will also be much, much deeper and experianced.

I believe if this team played the Cincy of last year, we would win by more than 30.

Cincy beat NC State 44-14 two weeks later

I know comparison through a common opponent is a little sketchy, but if those assumptions are reasonable, then it would be reasonable to expect a UT win by a large margin.

In addition to what has already been said let's do a little exercise...

Nc State vs our schedule.

Montana full strength... Win
Cincinnati full strength... Even though they beat you guys last year if I remember correctly I do believe you guys had a lot of injuries so at full strength I will give a win

Florida in the first quarter Amerson tears acl... Loss (best player lost vs best player lost)

Buffalo.. Win

Georgia... Glennon breaks his thumb in game. Loss

LSU... Loss

Bama... Loss

Sc .... Loss

Mtsu... Win

Ark... Loss

Vandy... Win

Ky... Win.

So giving you a Cincinnati win after they even beat you guys last year you just win 6.

Take into account last year dl had one guy close to 300lbs. This year 5 and maybe 6

Best players back... Added Patterson etc

Let's assume Amerson is deon and completely shuts down Hunter. Can the rest of your secondary shut down Rogers, Patterson, and Rivera... I think not

So looking are you guys really that much better based on last year's record? (which means nothing for this game fyi)

Appreciate the class comment, being a state fan builds character to say the least.
Our released depth chart - http://ncstate.rivals.com/cdepthtext.asp
-To answer a & b, as you can see from the depth chart, We hope that our Oline is finally where we expect it to be as a Tom O'Brian coached team. At the very least, they are all upperclassmen and have shown some promise when all healthy in the past.
-c. Your wide receivers do scare me, but for those thinking we are relying on Amerson to shut down everyone, that is not the case. We have an experienced secondary and while they will have to adjust to your athleticism, they have all been around long enough to accept and understand our "bend dont break" defensive scheme. Designed to sort of allow short gains but prevent the homerun plays. In theory, haha.
-d. Dont know too much about Bray, except what I've read here. He seems very talented as he's been invited to some of the same camps that our 3000 yard first year QB has been invited to this offseason. We do have some experience stopping the option, since we play Georgia Tech every year and they probably average 50 passing yards a game.

One thing I notice about most of your points are they relate to new players that did not play for the Vols last year for one reason or another. Even good players take time to adjust. Somewhat related; our basketball team that made the sweet sixteen this past year, had the exact same players on it that it did the previous two. Two years ago we only won 15 games. There's no substitute for experience within the system. Oh yea, and coaching (new coach this past year). Seems that some of your fans question your coaches ability.

I think it's going to be close. While you're favored by 6-7 in the betting lines, we are ranked higher in some preseason ranking sites. I'm sure the reason for this is the vols have a lot of changes this year. It's fun to be optimistic, but changes can go both ways.

Here's your recruiting ranking per rivals for the last 4 years:

2009: #52
2010: #34
2011: #86
2012: #53

Duke has beaten you in recruiting the last 2 years. :salute:

I think the only reasons it'll be closer than most VOL fans would want is because we are playing in the Georgia Dome and we are installing a new defense with several new players on the D-line.

LAJBoys, you can say that but its just speculation. Who knows how we'd have done with that schedule. I do see 7 wins probably being the ceiling, however. I'm not even posting over here to say we're gonna win. I'm just wondering where this insane optimism is coming from. You're probably more athletic, we're probably better coached. Thing is, we finally have some talent at positions that have not been great for us the past couple of years. Coming off of two seasons with at least 8 wins, and hopefully getting better at our weakest positions (even if only through experience), we should be better this year, right? To say you're gonna win by 20 doesnt seem justified

NCSU, what sort of offense do yall run? We are definitely a pass heavy team, but have emphasized the need for improvement in our running game this entire offseason. (hired Jay Graham, Dooley preaches about it, need a running game to win in sec, etc.) I've heard a little about your quarterback but who are all the playmakers that we will be facing?

Georgia dome? Bad luck or something? That's ridiculous. Good teams win wherever.
Also on a side note. You can say we suck, we're gonna get stomped, call us ugly for all I care, but typing in UNC instead of NCSU is crossing the line. I've only seen it in this forum a few times, and not intentional, but still. That's messed up.

No way to justify it. It is nothing more than preseason optimism, and Vol fans hoping that their team is ready to play a "statement" game early. In reality this could turn out to be a mistake marred game on both sides.

My only prediction is that Vol fans will make this a home game for UT.

They lost by 30 to cincy, that margin of victory wasnt just injuries. How can you sit there with a straight face, and type that that would be a win otherwise. LOSS! 5 win team IMO.

Your roster looks good size-wise, especially OL and DE/DT. If their skills are close to typical SEC team skills, they will be trouble for us.

The QB I referred to isn't Bray, It's Peterson, I think he's seen as a sort Tebow II with a better arm.

The new players need to adjust as you say but they will see playing time. CDD isn't scared to play freshmen, especially if they are capable of helping in situations. Tenn. tends to have big tall WRs every year but now has a few speeders as well. Will be interesting to see what this means for the season.

Nothing to do really except wait for the game to be played. Wish I could go watch it but won't be able to. However, I do think I will be able to see it either on TV or streaming video.

Oh yeah, welcome to Volnation. Hope your visit is enjoyable. If they come after you, just ignore the nasty ones and focus on the nice folks here.

I was trying to be nice. You are probably right. 5-6 win team at best with our schedule

And if we had their ACC schedule we probably would of went to a bowl game.

Using the same as before... Our team vs their schedule

Liberty.. Win

Wake Forrest.... Win

South Alabama.... Win

Cincinnati.... Win

Georgia Tech... Loss

Central Michigan... Win

Virginia... Win

Fsu.... Loss

UNC... Win... (should have in bowl if not for dumb rule)

BC... Loss

Clemson... Loss

Maryland... Win

I think Maryland and BC could be flipped either way but that is 8 wins before the bowl game.
