Alright, I couldn't just sit on the sidelines for this one. I am a native Knoxvillian, bred a Tennessee fan, and I just finished my undergrad in meteorology at NC State.
I agree that you shouldn't give a damn about what any other school says about your coaching staff, but it IS all over the networks, and it IS an interesting development. Obviously, the main thing to "outsiders" is that Kiffin is talking this apparent trash to the other SEC schools without having a game of college experience under his belt in at least 10 years (ask NC State fans about a certain coach without college experience). That coupled with players and some of the coaching staff jumping ship, makes for what appears to be a Barnum and Bailey circus at Neyland. I do believe that Kiffin will bring a new fire to the program much like Bruce did for basketball, but I'm not sure that it will be immediate, even with the stable of highly rated players on the depth chart. I am anxious to see what he can do, but I'm not getting my expectations up (I am an NC State fan after all).
As for NC State: yes, things have been relatively quiet here in Raleigh, especially during my past 4 years in college. Basketball hasn't made a peep nationwide since it's defeat of UConn in the 2005 tournament, but Coach Lowe has the team, hopefully, headed in the right direction now that he has a stable of his own players. They'll be in the tournament in 2010. Football has made the corner, and is looking to make a new name for itself this year in the ACC. Russell Wilson, the ACC 1st team QB, Willie Young on D Line and about 10 other returning starters are back to continue where the second half of the season left off. I'm not saying a run to a BCS bowl, but I feel 8 wins is a pretty safe bet. You're thinking "Yeah, yeah, ACC. Just VA Tech and maybe Florida State." It's true only a few teams make it into the low to middle rankings, but we all just end up beating on each other. The conference will be down this year, but it has been competitive in the past 5 years. And, of course, the hiring Kellie Jolly Harper to the women's basketball team to take the place of the late Kay Yow. You WILL know of NC State later this year.
Best of luck to the Vols this year. I'm anxious to see how it unfolds.
