Fast-rising ATH Caleb Cooper 'surprised' by Tennessee offer, ready to visit in the Spring

Providence Day School (N.C.) standout athlete Caleb Cooper has started to catch the attention of multiple college programs around the country. Last week, Tennessee offered, and the fast-rising athlete is ready to visit Rocky Top in the spring.
Cooper has been familiar with Tennessee’s staff for some time now, but he was not expecting to pick up the offer when he did on Friday.
“It caught me by surprise,” Cooper told Volquest of picking up the offer from the Vols. “I had been talking with Coach Ruzic the last couple of days, just a little bit more increasingly. We have had a relationship since he has been on staff, and then he told me he wanted to get me connected with Coach Poindexter. So we hopped on a call, and that is when I got the news. They told me the news together, and it was definitely something I enjoyed hearing.”

Cooper left the conversation impressed by Tennessee’s new safeties coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator.

“I mean, he was great to talk to,” Cooper said of Poindexter. “He has a great track record for sure. He said that he loves my film and would love for me to be a Volunteer. He definitely sees me within the program, so they sent me all of the spring schedule, and I am definitely looking forward to getting up there. First impression of Coach Dex is that he seems like a great guy. He has great enthusiasm and great energy. I really look forward to getting to meet him in person.”

Cooper will be on Rocky Top at some point in the spring, and he is excited to learn more about the program during the visit.

“Just seeing how he (Poindexter) coaches and how he functions as a mentor,” Cooper said. “How he is as a leader to the players he coaches. I want to see the ins and outs and how they function day-to-day as a team. I have been there before, so getting back up there to see that will be a big thing. Getting to meet the entire new defensive staff, Jim Knowles and everybody. That will be a big priority for me.”

As new schools continue to emerge in his recruitment, the priority remains the same for Cooper.

“A big thing for me and a big word for me is intentionality,” Cooper said. “I want to see which teams really show me the most interest, which ones really want me and really pursue me, not just what can I give them, but what can I get from them. How can I mature as a young man and as a player. I am not just looking ten years down the road or what I can get from them to make it to the NFL. I am looking to see how they can develop me to be the best of where I am at that moment and be the best I can be on and off the field.”

As for the state of Tennessee, Cooper has plenty of familiarity, as he spent 13 years in Nashville before his family moved to Charlotte.

Dad used to be State Director for Tennessee FCA. Best Friends with Dave Canales, and took the job when offered to work with the Panthers. Scott is a great dude, knew his son was going to blow up. Glad we offered.

Apparently a Tennessee kid originally.

Let’s get a Providence Day pipeline going. When this program was at its best we recruited NC and VA very well.
Charlotte period. There's so much talent in that city. It's a huge city but still underrated in regards to talent. There's about 6 kids just from Charlotte that I would love to sign with Tennessee. This is pretty much every year. It sucks what happened to Pearce. But dude was a beast. Sanders, House and yeah get Cooper too
