I would say you're in the minority there. Many people I talk too, including my own belief is that drive through Waynesville via 40 is brutal.

26 is safer, IMO. You can always take JC to Boone via 321. Then to Winston that way.

Its 3 hours from JC.

Major shock. Google Maps actually says to go I74 to I77 to I81 then onto 40 is only 14 miles longer than 40 door to door. Not to mention the washed out section at the state line.
