I don't think the success of today is downplayed only the understanding that this is just one step along the way to success.

first we have to get these guys to actually show up and not flip between now and spring. then we have to keep them healthy and coach them up successfully and then we have to keep them from bolting to the portal.

unfortunately a huge signing class (which this undoubtedly is) just doesn't mean as much as it used to mean as a sign of success on the field.

this great class is now all signed up. time to turn attention to the coaching staff and cleaning that up. we need coaches that can turn these guys into winning college athletes.

The portal now is where immediate success comes from. Most high school kids you wont see for a year or two....If they are still here. Lol.

Heupel needs to hit a HR in the portal in several spots. Managing a roster hasn't been his strong suit.

I was checking into that this morning. The '26 commitments thread in the RF shows we are recruiting 2x more defensive players than offensive.

I went back and looked at the ‘23 and ‘24 classes and must say I was surprised at the number of those guys that are no longer on the team. I guess if 50 percent of your class stays and contributes that’s average nowadays

I think at the base of it, Heupel needs to routinely churn out Top 5-8 classes to keep the foundation strong. But he's going to have to crush it in the portal as well at key spots.

I've been following recruiting for the last 15 years and I've never seen anything like this day for Tennessee. with the exception of maybe one of Butch Jones's classes that had Kahlil McKensie and Alvin Kamara in it.

this is a turn around in recruiting for coach Heupel.

You are correct, however the quality of offensive playmakers vs defensive playmakers was my concern, I would hope we could get some 5 stardust . Before the stars don't matter,how many 3 star Wrs or Qbs do we sign?

That is true. We have about half the D commits ranked as 4 stars and half as 3 stars. No 5 stars.
Most of the pundits think we will be very active in the portal for defensive help. I hope we can pull some higher stars and maybe broom some 'dead weight'.
